No, the firmware edition on a BitBox02 cannot be changed.

For security, the device's bootloader prevents switching between the Multi-coin and the Bitcoin-only firmware. This applies to all BitBox02 devices, including the original and the new BitBox02 NOVA.

This means you cannot convert a Multi-edition device into a Bitcoin-only one, or the other way around. To learn more about the features of each edition, see our comparison: Which version is right for you?

I want a different edition. What can I do?

While you cannot change the firmware on your current device, you can easily migrate to a new BitBox02 with your preferred edition. Your wallet backup is compatible with any BitBox02.

If you have a BitBox02 Multi and want to switch to a Bitcoin-only experience with the new BitBox02 NOVA, you can simply restore your existing backup on the new device.

How to migrate to a new BitBox02 edition:

  1. Purchase the BitBox02 with your desired firmware edition (e.g., BitBox02 NOVA Bitcoin-only).
  2. During the setup of the new device, select the "Restore from backup" option in the BitBoxApp.
  3. Restore your wallet using your microSD card backup, or by entering your 24 recovery words on the device.

Your wallet will be restored on the new device.

What happens to my coins when I restore on a different edition?

Restoring your backup is safe and works across different editions, but with one important distinction:

  • Restoring on a Bitcoin-only device: If you restore a backup from a Multi-edition wallet onto a Bitcoin-only device, only your bitcoin will be visible and accessible. All other coins and tokens (altcoins) will not appear.
  • Restoring on a Multi-edition device: If you restore a backup from a Bitcoin-only wallet, you will see your bitcoin. You will also have the option to add accounts for other supported coins.

Your backup, secured by your 24 recovery words, is the key to all your crypto assets. Restoring it on a different device simply changes which of those assets are displayed and managed.
