Install or update the BitBoxApp on your Android phone or tablet through Google Play. You can do this before your BitBox arrives, without connecting a device. If your Android device does not have Google Play, follow the official APK installation instructions instead.
Before you begin, check the BitBoxApp device and operating-system requirements. Opening the app confirms that it runs; connecting a BitBox02 also requires your Android device to support USB OTG, which allows it to communicate with USB devices.
Installation never requires your recovery words
You do not need your microSD backup or recovery words to install or update the BitBoxApp. If an app, website, or person asks for recovery words during this process, stop. Never enter them on your Android device: anyone who obtains them can access your funds.
Install or update through Google Play
Use the official listing and check the publisher before downloading. To update an existing installation, use Update; you do not need to uninstall the app first.
- On your Android device, open the official BitBoxApp listing on Google Play. Alternatively, open the Google Play Store, search for BitBoxApp, and select its listing.
- Check that the app is named BitBoxApp and the publisher displayed beneath the name is BitBox Swiss. The listing’s About the developer section identifies the company as Shift Crypto AG. If the app or publisher differs, do not install it.

- In the Play Store listing on your Android device, tap Install for a new installation or Update if an update is available. Follow Google Play’s on-screen instructions and wait for the download and installation to finish. If the button already says Open, the app is installed and the listing is not offering an update.
- Tap Open, or open BitBoxApp from your app list. Installation or updating is complete when the app opens normally. A screen asking you to connect your BitBox is expected when no device is connected.
Keep the BitBoxApp up to date for security improvements, compatibility updates, and bug fixes. For future updates, return to the same listing and tap Update when offered. Google Play may also update the app automatically if automatic updates are enabled.
If the download or update does not complete, follow Google’s help for Play Store download problems. If Google Play reports that your device is incompatible, check the requirements linked above before trying another installation method.
Continue with your BitBox02
You can now connect your BitBox02 to your compatible Android device by USB and follow the BitBoxApp’s on-screen instructions. Unlock an existing wallet to access its accounts; for a new BitBox02, continue with device setup. Installing the app alone does not complete wallet setup.
BitBoxApp updates and BitBox02 firmware updates are separate. If the app offers a firmware update after you connect your device, follow the BitBox02 firmware update instructions.
