If your BitBox02 touch sensors are unresponsive or erratic, it's often because of how its capacitive sensors work. These sensors measure conductivity to detect your finger's position and can sometimes lose accuracy or be affected by nearby conductive materials, leading to missed inputs. Follow these simple steps to quickly restore full functionality.
How the touch sensors work
Your BitBox02 uses touch sensors along each side to detect three simple gestures:
- Tap with one finger to select something, like a character in your password.
- Scroll by sliding one finger to move through a list or a receiving address.
- Hold with your thumb and index finger on both sides at once to confirm important actions like signing a transaction.
Solution
First, let's make sure everything is up-to-date and calibrated.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have the latest software.
- Install the latest BitBoxApp from our official download page: https://bitbox.swiss/download/
- Open the BitBoxApp and connect your hardware wallet.
- Click on Manage device in the app's sidebar and install any available firmware updates for your BitBox02.
Sensor calibration
Your device calibrates itself automatically. To ensure this process works correctly, please follow these two steps:
-
Step 1: Initial calibration
Plug in your BitBox02 and, without touching it, wait for 10 seconds. This allows the sensors time to adjust automatically. After waiting, try using the touch sensors again. -
Step 2: Manual guide
If the issue persists, plug in the BitBox02. Then, use your index finger to slowly and firmly slide along the entire length of each touch-sensitive side, from one edge to the other. This helps the device register the full sensor area.
Avoid environmental interference
Because the sensors work by detecting conductivity, other conductive items in the environment can interfere with them.
For the best results, please make sure you:
- Do not place the BitBox02 on a metal surface, like a steel desk.
- Do not rest the device on your lap while using it.
- Touch only one sensor area at a time (unless you are using the "hold" gesture).
Additional tips
If the steps above do not solve the problem, try these suggestions:
- Ensure your hands are clean and dry before use.
- Reboot your computer or mobile device and repeat the calibration steps.
- Try a different connection setup. Use a different USB-C cable, try another USB port, or plug the device in directly without any adapters.
- Try using a different host device. For example, connect your BitBox02 to an Android phone to see if the issue is specific to your computer.
