This article explains how to update your BitBox02 firmware to the latest version using the BitBoxApp. Firmware updates are essential to benefit from the latest security improvements, bug fixes, and new features.

Where to see the latest updates

All BitBox software and firmware is open source. You can review current and past releases, as well as detailed changelogs, on GitHub:

These pages allow you to verify:

  • What the newest version is
  • What changes and improvements each update includes
  • When a release was published

ℹ️ Info

  • The GitHub release pages are intended for transparency and review.
  • Firmware updates themselves are always installed via the BitBoxApp — not manually from GitHub.

Important to know about firmware and the BitBoxApp

The BitBox02 firmware is always bundled with the BitBoxApp.

This means:

  • You do not install firmware separately
  • You do not need to download firmware files manually
  • Installing the latest BitBoxApp automatically provides the latest compatible firmware

If a newer firmware version is available for your device, the BitBoxApp will notify you directly.

ℹ️ Info

  • Not every BitBoxApp update includes a firmware update.
  • However, whenever a new firmware version is released, it is always delivered through a compatible BitBoxApp version.

Why is updating important?

We strongly recommend keeping both the BitBoxApp and firmware up to date to ensure optimal security and reliability.

Updates may include:

  • Security enhancements
  • Bug fixes
  • Performance improvements
  • Support for new features or assets

The BitBoxApp will clearly inform you when an update is available. For critical updates, you will see a prominent prompt. For standard updates, you can follow the steps below.

⚠️ Warning

  • Running outdated firmware or app versions may expose you to known issues that have already been fixed in newer releases.

How to update the firmware

Once you have installed the latest BitBoxApp from the official download page, you can begin the update process.

  1. Open the BitBoxApp and connect your BitBox02. If an update is available, you will see a red dot on the Settings icon in the left-hand sidebar.
  1. Click on Settings and then go to the Manage device tab. You will see the red notification dot here as well.
  1. Scroll down to the Device information section. Next to your current firmware version, you will see a message that says New upgrade available. Click on it.
  1. A new window will appear showing the details of the firmware update. Review the information and click the Upgrade button.
  1. You will be prompted to confirm the action on your BitBox02. Use the touch sensors on the device to confirm that you want to proceed with the firmware upgrade.
  1. After confirming on the device, click the Upgrade firmware now button in the BitBoxApp.
  1. The upgrade will begin. You can monitor the progress on the status bar shown in the BitBoxApp and on your BitBox02's screen. Do not disconnect the device during this process.

⚠️ Warning

  • Do not disconnect the BitBox02 during the firmware upgrade.

  1. Once the update is complete, your BitBox02 will restart. You will then need to unlock it with your device password (and passphrase, if you use one) to access your wallet.

Your BitBox02 firmware is now up to date.
