This article will help you solve common problems with your microSD card for the BitBox02.

Check the insertion order

It is important to insert the microSD card correctly before connecting your device.

  1. To ensure the correct orientation, hold the BitBox02 with the screen facing you. The label on the microSD card should also be facing you as you insert it.
  2. Insert the microSD card firmly into the slot.
    1. It has a spring-loaded mechanism, so you should feel it click into place when fully seated.
    2. To remove it, push the card in lightly, and the spring will release it.
  3. Plug the BitBox02 into your computer. Inserting the card after the device is powered on can cause detection errors.

If you notice that the card gets stuck despite correct insertion, or if the spring mechanism does not click into place, this may indicate a hardware issue. Please record a short video demonstrating the problem and contact our support team directly with the details.

Verify card formatting

The BitBox02 requires the microSD card to have a FAT32 format.

While the card included with your BitBox02 is pre-formatted, reformatting the card can sometimes resolve detection issues. If you are using a third-party card, this is a more common problem. If you have a card reader, you can reformat the card to FAT32 using your computer.

Important: Never insert a microSD card that already contains your wallet backup into any device other than your BitBox02. This step should only be performed during the initial setup before a backup has been made to the card.

Test with an alternate card

If you have another microSD card, try using it with your BitBox02. This helps determine if the issue is with the original card or the device itself. If the new card works, the original microSD card is likely defective.

For a list of recommended cards, see our guide on choosing a microSD card for your BitBox02.

Use an alternate backup option

This option is only available when you are setting up your BitBox02 for the first time or after a device reset. If you are having trouble with the microSD card during this process, you can use an alternate backup method to get started.

  1. During the setup process in the BitBoxApp, choose the option to skip the microSD backup.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to back up your wallet using the 24 recovery words instead.

For a complete walkthrough of the setup, please see our guide on how to set up your BitBox02. You can always add a microSD card backup later once the card issue is resolved.

Still having trouble?

If you have tried all the steps above and the microSD card is still not working correctly, our support team is ready to help. To resolve your issue as quickly as possible, please provide the following information in your support request:

  • A brief summary of the troubleshooting steps you have already tried.
  • Is the problematic microSD card the original one from the BitBox02 package or a third-party card?
  • If you tried another card, what was its brand and model, and did it work?
  • Your computer's operating system (e.g., Windows 11, macOS Sonoma).
  • A short video or a few photos that clearly show the issue (e.g., showing the card not being detected in the app).

You can submit your request through the official BitBox support portal.
