This guide walks you through the simple and secure process of receiving Bitcoin (BTC) with your BitBox02 and the BitBoxApp.

Before you start

To receive Bitcoin, you need to have two things ready:

Step-by-step guide to receiving Bitcoin

Receiving crypto is a critical moment, and the BitBox02 is designed to make it safe and simple. The most important step is to verify the receiving address directly on your BitBox02 screen.

  1. Open the BitBoxApp on your computer.
  2. In the left sidebar, select the Bitcoin account you want to receive funds into.
  3. Click the large Receive Bitcoin button at the center of the account view.
  1. The Receive Bitcoin window will open, showing part of your new receiving address.
    1. To see the full address and ensure it is correct, click the Verify address on BitBox02 button.
  1. Now, the BitBoxApp will prompt you to connect your hardware wallet. Connect your BitBox02 and unlock it with your device password.
  2. The complete address will now be displayed on your BitBox02's screen.
    1. Carefully compare the full address shown on your computer with the one shown on your BitBox02. They must match exactly.

Security Rule: Always trust the address shown on your BitBox02 device. If the addresses do not match, something is wrong. Do not use the address. Cancel the process and contact our support team immediately.

  1. Once you have confirmed the addresses match, you can safely copy the address from the BitBoxApp. You can either click the copy icon next to the address or scan the QR code.
  1. After copying, tap the checkmark (✓) on your BitBox02 to confirm that you have verified the address. This will close the verification window in the app.
  2. Paste the verified address into the withdrawal form of your exchange or provide it to the person sending you Bitcoin. It is good practice to double-check the pasted address one last time before the sender initiates the transaction.
  3. Once the transaction is sent, it will appear in your BitBoxApp account, usually marked as "pending". You do not need to keep your BitBox02 connected while you wait for the transaction to be confirmed on the blockchain.

Understanding address types

The BitBoxApp supports several Bitcoin address formats. You might need to switch from the default if the sender's wallet or exchange does not support it. You can change the format within the Receive Bitcoin window before you verify the address.

Native Segwit (bc1q...) - Default

This is the modern Bitcoin address standard. It offers the lowest transaction fees and is the default and recommended choice.

Taproot (bc1p...) - Newest

Taproot is the latest address format, offering future benefits for privacy and efficiency. However, it is not yet widely supported. Only use this format if you are certain the sender's wallet or exchange can send to bc1p... addresses.

Wrapped Segwit (3...) - Compatible

If the sender tells you they cannot send to a bc1q... address, their service may be outdated. In the Receive window, click Change to compatible address (Segwit) to generate a 3... address. This format is compatible with older systems.

Privacy best practice: Use new addresses

For enhanced privacy, the BitBoxApp automatically provides a new, unused receiving address each time you click the Receive Bitcoin button. Although you can reuse old addresses (they never expire), we strongly recommend using a new one for every transaction to make it harder for others to track your financial activity on the blockchain.

Video tutorial

We also have a video that walks you through this process. Please be aware that the BitBoxApp is regularly updated, so some visuals or labels in the video may differ slightly from the current version of the app. The steps described in this article are always the most up-to-date.
