Looking to update your BitBox device password for enhanced security? This guide will walk you through the process. It’s important to know that changing your device password involves resetting your BitBox and then restoring your wallet from your backup. During the restore process, you'll be able to set a new password.
This guide is for the BitBox device password – the one you enter each time to unlock your BitBox. It does not apply to the optional passphrase.
Before you begin: Verify your backup!
This is the most crucial step. Before you reset your BitBox, you must ensure you have a working and verified backup of your wallet. This can be:
- Your microSD card backup.
- Your recovery words (seed phrase) written down.
Verifying your backup
microSD Card: Please verify your microSD card backup thoroughly. If you're unsure how, refer to your guide on How to verify your microSD wallet backup
Recovery Words: If you prefer to use your recovery words, ensure they are correctly noted. You can learn how to display your recovery words on your BitBox here: How to display my recovery words on my BitBox
While both methods are valid, restoring from the microSD card is generally the easiest and quickest way to get your wallet back up and running.
Steps to change your device password
Once you have successfully verified your chosen wallet backup, you are ready to proceed:
- Confirm your backup: Double-check that your microSD card backup is verified and accessible, or that your recovery words are correctly recorded and at hand.
- Reset your BitBox: You will now need to perform a factory reset on your BitBox. For detailed instructions on how to do this safely, please follow your comprehensive guide: How to wipe the BitBox (Factory reset)
- Restore your wallet: After the reset, the BitBoxApp will guide you to set up the device. Choose the option to restore your wallet. You can do this from your microSD card backup (the quickest method) or by manually entering your recovery words.
- Set your new device password: During the wallet restoration process, you will be prompted to choose a new device password. Enter your desired new password and confirm it.
That's it! Your BitBox will now be secured with your new device password.
Important reminder
Remember, the device password protects your physical device. The process described above is for changing this device password only. It is different from managing your, optional passphrase (BIP39 passphrase) which is an advanced security feature for creating hidden wallets.
