You can send a Lightning payment by scanning a QR code or entering the recipient's payment information. Your Lightning wallet needs enough available balance to cover both the payment and its fee.
You do not need to connect your BitBox for an ordinary Lightning payment. The payment is authorized by the hot wallet on your phone, so review the recipient, amount, fee, and total deduction carefully before sending.
Send a payment
- Open Lightning in the BitBoxApp.
- Select Send.
- Scan the recipient's QR code. Alternatively, select Enter address or invoice and enter the information manually, or select Paste from clipboard.
- In Send Lightning, confirm that the BitBoxApp recognized the expected payment type.
- If the request does not contain a fixed amount, enter the amount to send.
- Select Continue when shown.
- Wait while the wallet prepares the payment and calculates the fee.
- Review the recipient, amount, description, Lightning fee, and total balance deduction.
- Select Send only when every detail is correct.
Lightning payments cannot be reversed
Check scanned or pasted payment information before selecting Send. If you send the wrong amount or pay the wrong recipient, only the recipient can return the funds in a new payment.
Payment sent
The payment is complete when the BitBoxApp shows it as successful and it appears in the Lightning transaction history. If the result is unclear, check the history before trying again to avoid paying twice.
Supported payment information
| Information | How the BitBoxApp uses it |
|---|---|
| BOLT 11 invoice | A single-payment request. It may contain a fixed amount or ask you to enter one. |
| Lightning address | A reusable, human-readable address that obtains a current invoice from the recipient. |
| LNURL-Pay | A request used to obtain the payment details needed to pay a recipient. |
| LNURL-Withdraw | A request that allows your wallet to receive funds from a compatible service. Review the recognized request before confirming it. |
| Bitcoin address | Not accepted as an external recipient in the Lightning send field. To move funds to one of your BitBox Bitcoin accounts, use Select an account. |
Do not treat these formats as interchangeable. Confirm which payment type the BitBoxApp recognized before continuing. To send funds to a BitBox Bitcoin account instead, follow Withdraw funds from your Lightning wallet to a Bitcoin account.
Understand the fee
The Lightning fee depends on the payment amount and the route available at that moment. The BitBoxApp calculates it shortly before sending and shows both the fee and the total amount that will be deducted from your Lightning balance. A specific fee or route cannot be guaranteed in advance.
If the payment does not complete
- The wallet balance is insufficient: lower the amount or top up the wallet.
- The payment information is malformed or unsupported: ask the recipient for a supported invoice, address, or LNURL request.
- No payment route is available: do not repeatedly confirm the same request. Try again later or ask the recipient for another request.
- The payment remains pending or its result is unclear: check the transaction history before repeating it.
Contact BitBox Support
Contact BitBox Support if the same failure returns. Include the BitBoxApp version, mobile operating system, approximate time, amount, payment-information type, transaction status, and exact non-sensitive error message.
Share only the payment information necessary to investigate the failure. Never send recovery words, backup contents, an optional passphrase, private keys, passwords, or PINs.
To request a payment instead, see Receive Lightning payments and use a Lightning address.
