Want to keep your crypto neatly organized? The BitBoxApp makes it easy to create multiple accounts on your BitBox02 hardware wallet. This feature is perfect for separating funds for different purposes, giving you more control and clarity over your digital assets.
The foundation: Your single wallet backup
Before creating new accounts, it's important to understand that your entire BitBox02 wallet is secured by your single master seed phrase (your 24 recovery words). All of your individual accounts are derived from this one seed.
This means:
- One backup to rule them all: Your existing wallet backup, created during the initial setup of your BitBox02, already covers all accounts you will ever create.
- No new backups needed: You do not need to make a new backup when you add a new account. It's automatically secured by your original seed phrase.
- Accounts for life: These accounts are permanently tied to your wallet's seed phrase.
Why use multiple accounts?
Using multiple accounts offers several advantages for better organization and privacy:
- Better organization: You can create separate accounts for different purposes, such as "Long-term savings," "Trading," or “Inheritance.”
- Independent records: Each account has its own unique receive addresses, transaction history, and Extended Public Key.
How to add a new account
- Open the BitBoxApp on your computer.
- Navigate to Settings in the bottom-left corner of the app.

- Click on the Manage accounts tab.

- Click the + Add account button.

- Now, connect and unlock your BitBox02.

- Choose the cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin) for which you want to create the new account.

- Give the account a descriptive name, like "My BTC Savings".

- Click the Add account button to confirm.

That’s it! Your new account will now appear in the left-hand sidebar of the BitBoxApp, ready to use
How to access your accounts on a new computer
If you install the BitBoxApp on a new computer or restore your wallet from a backup, you will notice that the app only shows the first, default account for each cryptocurrency. Do not worry, your funds are not lost; they are safely secured by your seed phrase.
To see your other accounts, you must "rediscover" them by re-adding them in the exact same order you first created them. Accounts are derived from your seed in a specific, unchangeable order, so this process reliably finds them every time.
Here’s an example:
- Let's say you had five Bitcoin accounts and used the fifth one the most.
- After setting up your BitBox02 on a new computer, you will only see the first Bitcoin account.
- You will need to go to Settings > Manage accounts and click the + Add account button for Bitcoin four more times.
- The BitBoxApp will then find your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and finally your 5th Bitcoin account, showing the correct balance and transaction history for each one.
This behavior is consistent across all cryptocurrencies supported by the BitBox02. The third Ethereum account you created will always be the third Ethereum account found, and so on. By re-adding accounts in this way, you allow the BitBoxApp to safely find your funds and transaction history.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why don't all my accounts show up on a new computer?
For privacy reasons, the BitBoxApp starts by only showing the default account. You need to manually re-add your additional accounts through the Settings > Manage accounts menu for them to appear.
Is there a limit to how many accounts I can create?
Yes, the limits for creating new accounts depend on the cryptocurrency:
- For Bitcoin and Litecoin, you can create a virtually unlimited number of accounts. However, you can only have five unused accounts in a row. To add a sixth account, the fifth account must first be "used"—meaning it needs to have a transaction history, even if its current balance is zero.
- For other coins like Ethereum, there is a maximum of five accounts.
Do I need to create a new backup when I add an account?
No. All accounts, current and future, are automatically secured by the single seed phrase backup you created when you first set up your BitBox02
