Ensuring the security of your cryptocurrency assets involves creating reliable backups of your wallet. With the BitBox02, you can easily create additional backups using microSD cards, providing redundancy and peace of mind.

Why create additional backups?

Having multiple backups protects against unforeseen events such as hardware failure, loss, or damage. By storing backups in separate, secure locations, you reduce the risk of losing access to your funds.

How to create additional microSD card backups:

  1. Prepare a new microSD card:
    1. Buy from us a microSD backup cards (2-pack)
    2. Or use a quality microSD card (SDHC type) from us or reputable brands like SanDisk.
    3. Ensure the card is formatted with the FAT (MS-DOS) or vFAT file system.
  2. Insert the microSD card into your BitBox02:
    1. Safely insert the prepared microSD card into the slot on your BitBox02 device.
  3. Access the BitBoxApp:
    1. Open the BitBoxApp on your computer.
    2. Navigate to the "Manage device" section.
  4. Create the backup:
    1. Select “Manage backups.”
    2. You will see that the new microSD card does not contain any backups so far.
    3. Choose the option to create a new backup.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Important considerations:

  • Security: Store each backup in a secure location, such as a safe or safety deposit box. Anyone with access to your backup can potentially access your funds.
  • Passphrase protection: If you've enabled an optional passphrase, remember that it's not stored on the microSD card. You'll need this passphrase, in addition to the backup, to restore your wallet.
  • Avoid digital exposure: Never insert your backup microSD card into any device other than your BitBox02 to prevent potential security risks.

Alternative backup methods:

In addition to microSD card backups, consider writing down your 24 recovery words:

  • Backup card: Use an ageing-resistant backup card to record your recovery words.
  • Steelwallet: For maximum durability, engrave your recovery words onto a stainless steel plate using a Steelwallet, protecting against fire, water, and corrosion.

By creating multiple backups and storing them securely, you ensure that your cryptocurrency assets remain safe and accessible, even in unforeseen circumstances.
