This guide will walk you through the process of creating a backup of your BitBox02 wallet on the microSD card. A proper backup is the easiest and most secure way to restore your wallet if you ever lose, break, or reset your BitBox02.
Before you start
- A BitBox02 that is already set up. If you're starting with a new device, follow our setup guide first: Set up your BitBox02
- A compatible microSD card. The card included in the box is perfect. If you use your own, make sure it is a standard SDHC card formatted to FAT32.
- The BitBoxApp installed on your computer. You can download it here: BitBoxApp
How to create your microSD card backup
Creating a backup is a required part of setting up your BitBox02 for the first time, but you can also create a new one at any point.
- Open the BitBoxApp on your computer.
- Insert the microSD card into the BitBox02. Make sure the side with the text is facing up, matching the screen, and push gently until it clicks into place.
- Connect your BitBox02 to the computer.
- Unlock your BitBox02 by entering your device password.
- In the BitBoxApp, click Settings in the left-hand menu, then select the Manage device tab at the top.

- In the "Backups" section, click the Manage backups button.

- On the next screen, click Create backup to start the process.

- Follow the instructions on your BitBox02 screen. You will need to confirm the current date and re-enter your device password to authorize the new backup.
- The BitBoxApp will show your new backup listed with its name and creation date. This confirms the process was successful.
A note on the optional passphrase
The microSD card backup does not store your optional passphrase. This is a security feature to protect your hidden wallet. If you use this feature, you must remember or store your passphrase separately. You can learn more about the benefits and risks here: Benefits and risks of using an optional passphrase
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the purpose of the microSD card backup?
The microSD card instantly backs up your wallet's master secret. It's the easiest way to restore your funds if you lose or damage your BitBox02.
Can I use my own microSD card?
Yes, you can. Please ensure it is a standard microSDHC card formatted to FAT32. If you need a new one, you can get official cards here: microSD backup cards (2-pack)
Is the backup on the microSD card encrypted?
No, the backup file itself is not encrypted with your device password. This is a deliberate security design. You can read the reasoning behind it on our blog: Why microSD backups should not be encrypted by default
What should I do with my microSD card after the backup is created?
You should eject it from the BitBox02 and store it in a safe, private, and secure location. Never insert your backup microSD card into any other device, like a computer or phone.
