Refreshing data retention through verification

Every time you rewrite your data, the data retention period is refreshed. This makes regular verification a best practice - not only to ensure the backup is accessible but also to extend its longevity.

How to verify your microSD wallet backup

  1. Prepare your device:
    1. Insert your microSD card into your BitBox02.
    2. Connect your BitBox02 to your computer.
  2. Access the backup verification tool:
    1. Launch the BitBoxApp and unlock your BitBox02.
    2. Navigate to Manage device > Manage backups to view your backup list.

  1. Verify your backup:
    1. Click on Verify backup.
    2. Compare the backup name and backup ID shown on your BitBox02 with those displayed in the BitBoxApp.

This process automatically rewrites the backup file on your microSD card, thereby extending the data retention period.

To maintain optimal data security, verify your wallet backup every 6 to 12 months. Regular checks help confirm that your backup is intact, readable, and available when needed.

Best practices

  • Multiple backups: Avoid a single point of failure by maintaining multiple backup copies (microSD, paper, steel)
  • Regular verification: Frequent checks ensure your wallet backup remains secure and accessible, safeguarding your funds.
  • For 24 recovery words (paper or steel):
    • Ensure you know the location of your recovery phrase.
    • Verify that every word is still legible and undamaged.

Additional details

MicroSD cards are a reliable storage medium, though their reliability can diminish over time with heavy usage. The term data retention refers to the timespan during which a card is expected to securely store your data. For our microSD cards, this conservative estimate is 25+ years when stored below 55°C (130°F).
