Using a passphrase on your BitBox02 adds an extra layer of security to your wallet. This guide explains everything you need to know, from understanding what a passphrase is to enabling the optional passphrase feature.
What Is a Passphrase?
A passphrase is an additional string of characters that you enter after your device password. It is not stored on your BitBox02, meaning you must remember and enter it each time you unlock your wallet. Using a passphrase can protect your funds by adding an extra barrier against unauthorized access.
Ensure you understand how a passphrase works and the risks involved. Back up your passphrase securely because if you forget it, you may lose access to your funds. More Details you can find in our blog post: Benefits and risks of using an optional passphrase
Enabling the Optional Passphrase Feature
Follow these simple steps to activate the optional passphrase on your BitBox02:
-
Enable the Optional Passphrase Feature:
- Open the BitBoxApp and navigate to "Manage device."
- Click on "Enable optional passphrase."
- A warning will appear. Ensure you understand how a passphrase works and are aware of the associated risks.
- Confirm on your BitBox02 device that you want to enable the feature.
-
Using the Passphrase:
- After enabling, each time you unlock your BitBox02, you will be prompted to enter a passphrase.
- To access your standard wallet, simply confirm without entering any characters (i.e., use an empty passphrase).
- To access a passphrase-protected wallet, enter the corresponding passphrase and confirm.
-
Disabling the Optional Passphrase Feature:
- If you prefer not to be prompted for a passphrase upon each unlock, you can disable the feature in the device settings by clicking "Disable optional passphrase."
- Since the passphrase is not stored on the device, disabling this feature does not delete any data. You can re-enable it at any time to access passphrase-protected wallets by entering the correct passphrase during unlock.
