This guide provides step-by-step instructions for enabling and using an optional passphrase on your BitBox02. Following these steps carefully will help you securely create a new, hidden wallet.
Before you start
This is an advanced feature. Before you proceed, please confirm the following:
- You have read our guide, Understanding the BitBox02 Optional Passphrase, and fully understand the risks involved, especially the risk of permanent fund loss.
- Your 24 recovery words are already securely backed up and stored in a safe, offline location.
Enable the Optional Passphrase Feature
This process turns on the passphrase prompt in the BitBoxApp and on your device.
- Open the BitBoxApp on your computer.
- Connect your BitBox02 to your computer and unlock it by entering your device password.
- Navigate to Settings in the left-hand sidebar and click on the Manage device tab.

- Scroll down to the Expert settings section and click on Passphrase, which will show a status of "Disabled".

- Click the button to Enable optional passphrase.
- Continue through the information screens until you reach the summary, where you can click the final Enable passphrase button.

- Your BitBox02 device will now prompt you for confirmation. Tap the sensor on your device to confirm that you want to enable the feature.

- The feature is now enabled. Disconnect your BitBox02 and then reconnect it. You will now be prompted for your device password first, followed by the optional passphrase prompt.
Create and Access Your First Hidden Wallet
After enabling the feature, you will create your first hidden wallet by entering a new, unique passphrase. It is critical to decide on a strong one before you type it, as a weak passphrase puts your funds at risk. For more technical details on passphrase security, this Trezor blog post on passphrase strength is a great resource.
- Length: Make it at least 12 characters long. Longer is better.
- Complexity: Use a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Randomness: Do not use personal information like names, birthdays, or common words. A random combination of words or characters is much more secure.
- Accuracy: Write down your passphrase somewhere safe immediately. Every character, including case and symbols, must be exact.
Now, follow these steps to open your new hidden wallet:
- Connect your BitBox02 and choose the display orientation.
- Unlock the BitBox02 with your device password (not the passphrase).
- After entering the correct password, you will be asked to enter a passphrase.
- Carefully type your desired passphrase.
- Confirm the passphrase entry.
- Your BitBox02 will now ask you to visually verify the passphrase on its screen.
- If everything is correct, confirm it on the device. Your new passphrase-protected wallet is now unlocked.
Test Your New Hidden Wallet
This is the most important part of the setup process. Do not skip this test. It confirms that you have recorded your passphrase correctly before you risk any significant amount of funds.
- With your new hidden wallet open, generate a receiving address.
- Send a very small, test amount of cryptocurrency to this address (e.g., a few dollars' worth).
- Wait for the transaction to confirm in the BitBoxApp.
- Safely disconnect your BitBox02.
- Reconnect and unlock your BitBox02, entering the exact same passphrase again.
- Verify that the small test amount is visible in the wallet.
Only after you successfully and repeatedly complete this test should you consider sending larger amounts to this hidden wallet.
