This guide shows you how to display your recovery words on your BitBox02. You can use this feature to verify an existing backup or create a new written backup. For your security, the words are only ever shown on the BitBox02 screen, never on your computer.

Before you start

  • The BitBoxApp must be installed on your computer.
  • Your BitBox02 must be already set up.
  • You must know your BitBox02 device password.
  • If creating a new backup, have a pen and a blank recovery word card or piece of paper ready.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why would I need to see my recovery words?

You may need to see your recovery words for two main reasons:

  • To verify that a backup you have previously written down is 100% correct.
  • To create a new written backup as an alternative or secondary copy to your microSD card backup.

Is it safe to display the words on the screen?

Yes. The recovery words are only ever displayed on the BitBox02's trusted screen. They are never shown on your computer or phone screen, which could be compromised by malware or screen-recording viruses. This keeps your master secret secure.

Can I use this process to see my words for the first time?

Yes. During the standard BitBox02 setup, your recovery words are saved directly to the microSD card and are not displayed on-screen. This process allows you to see them for the first time, check them, and create a written backup.

What if my written backup doesn't match the words on the device?

The recovery words displayed on the BitBox02 are always the correct ones for your current wallet. If your written copy has a mistake, you must create a new, correct backup immediately.
