How to use the BitBox backup recovery tool

The BitBox backup recovery tool allows you to extract your 24 recovery words from your microSD card wallet backup. This is essential if you need to restore access to your wallet on a different hardware wallet.

When to use the backup recovery tool

Consider using the backup recovery tool if:

  • Your BitBox02 is lost or broken.
  • You cannot obtain a new BitBox02 promptly.
  • You have only a microSD card wallet backup and did not manually write down your 24 recovery words.

Important precautions

Use the backup recovery tool only when absolutely necessary, as it requires connecting your microSD card to a computer, which could expose your backup to potential risks. Always perform this process on an offline computer to minimize security threats.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare a new secure wallet: Ensure you have a new, secure wallet (preferably a hardware wallet) ready to receive your funds after recovery.
  2. Download the backup recovery tool: On an offline computer, download the backup recovery tool from the official BitBox GitHub repository.
  3. Run the tool offline: After downloading, disconnect the computer from the internet and run the backup recovery tool.
  4. Insert your microSD card: Plug the microSD card containing your wallet backup into the offline computer.
  5. Select the backup file: In the tool, click the "Choose file" button and select your wallet backup file from the microSD card.
  6. Retrieve your recovery words: The tool will display your 24 BIP-39 recovery words. Write them down carefully and keep them secure.
  7. Import recovery words into a wallet: Use the 24 recovery words to restore your wallet in a compatible wallet application, such as Electrum.
  8. Transfer funds to a secure wallet: After restoring access, promptly transfer your funds to the new secure wallet prepared in step 1, as the original wallet may now be compromised.
