The BitBox01, formerly known as the Digital Bitbox, is no longer supported and does not receive firmware or security updates. If you can still access your BitBox01 wallet, move your funds to a currently supported hardware wallet such as the BitBox02.
A BitBox01 backup cannot be imported or restored on a BitBox02. The two devices use different backup formats. You must create a new wallet on the BitBox02 and transfer your funds to addresses from that new wallet.
The BitBox01 is fully compatible only with BitBoxApp 4.37.1 or earlier. Version 4.37.1 is the final version with full BitBox01 support, including transactions, and is the version to use for this migration. Use it only temporarily to access the BitBox01 and move your funds. Use the latest BitBoxApp for setting up and using a BitBox02.
Protect your wallet information
Never share your BitBox01 backup, backup recovery password, private keys, device password, or hidden-wallet password with anyone. BitBox support will never ask for this information.
Never enter a real wallet backup or backup password into a website. A recovery procedure that exposes private keys must be performed offline.
For the complete collection of legacy instructions, see the archived BitBox01 guides. The BitBox01 end-of-life FAQ provides additional background.
Choose the correct recovery path
- Your BitBox01 works and you can access the wallet: Create a new wallet on a BitBox02 and transfer the funds as described below.
- Your BitBox01 works, but the installed BitBoxApp does not allow transactions: Temporarily replace it with BitBoxApp 4.37.1, then transfer the funds.
- Your BitBox01 is lost or broken, but you have the microSD card backup and its backup recovery password: Follow the offline backup recovery procedure below.
- You do not have the device, the backup, or the correct backup recovery password: Contact BitBox support securely. BitBox cannot reconstruct missing wallet secrets or recover a forgotten password.
Move your funds from BitBox01 to BitBox02
This migration creates a new wallet on the BitBox02 and transfers the funds on the relevant blockchain. It does not convert or import the BitBox01 backup.
Before you begin
Make sure you have:
- Your working BitBox01 and its device password
- The BitBox01 microSD card backup and its backup recovery password, if available
- A new or securely reset BitBox02
- Access to every BitBox01 wallet you used, including any hidden wallet
- Enough funds to pay the required blockchain transaction fees
If your BitBox01 holds assets other than Bitcoin, check which coins, tokens, and networks are supported by BitBox. A BitBox02 Bitcoin-only edition cannot receive or manage Litecoin, Ethereum, or tokens. Choose a BitBox02 edition that supports every asset you need to transfer.
Only one BitBoxApp version can be installed and used at a time. During the migration, you will replace the latest BitBoxApp with version 4.37.1 and then reinstall the latest version. You may need to repeat this switch to verify a test transaction before transferring the remaining balance.
Removing or reinstalling the BitBoxApp does not move your funds or erase a wallet from either hardware wallet. Wallet access is controlled by the hardware wallet and its backup, not by the desktop application.
1. Set up the BitBox02 with the latest BitBoxApp
- Download and install the latest BitBoxApp from the official BitBoxApp download page.
- Set up the BitBox02 and create a microSD card backup.
- Create a new wallet on the BitBox02. Do not try to import or restore the BitBox01 backup.
- Open the account for the asset you want to transfer and generate a receiving address. For Bitcoin, follow the steps to receive Bitcoin with the BitBoxApp and BitBox02.
- Verify the complete receiving address on the BitBox02 display and save it securely before disconnecting the BitBox02.
Verify every address and asset
Verify each receiving address on the BitBox02 display. Never send one type of cryptocurrency to an address for another asset. For example, do not send Litecoin or Ethereum to a Bitcoin address.
2. Replace the latest BitBoxApp with BitBoxApp 4.37.1
BitBoxApp 4.37.1 is outdated software. Install it only for the temporary BitBox01 migration, and download it only from the official BitBox GitHub repository.
- Completely close the latest BitBoxApp and make sure it is no longer running in the background.
- Uninstall or remove the currently installed BitBoxApp. If you use an AppImage, remove or set aside the current AppImage so that you do not open it during the migration.
- Open the official BitBoxApp 4.37.1 GitHub release and expand Assets.
- Download the installation file for your operating system:
-
macOS:
BitBox-4.37.1-macOS.zip -
Windows:
BitBox-4.37.1-win64-installer.exe -
Linux AppImage:
BitBox-4.37.1-x86_64.AppImage -
Linux Debian or Ubuntu:
bitbox_4.37.1_amd64.deb -
Linux RPM-based distributions:
bitbox-4.37.1-1.x86_64.rpm
-
macOS:
- Install or open BitBoxApp 4.37.1.
- Connect and unlock the BitBox01. Confirm that the expected wallet and balances appear before starting a transaction.
Matching .asc signature files are available in the same Assets section if you want to verify the downloaded file before opening it.
BitBoxApp 4.37.1 may not run on every current or future operating-system version. If it does not open or does not recognize the BitBox01, stop and contact BitBox support.
3. Transfer a small test amount
- Follow the archived instructions to transfer funds from BitBox01 to BitBox02.
- Enter the receiving address you verified on the BitBox02.
- Check the asset, address, amount, and transaction fee carefully.
- Send a small test amount.
- Wait for the transaction to be broadcast before closing BitBoxApp 4.37.1.
The archived BitBox01 instructions do not provide a complete current workflow for every asset. Contact BitBox support before transferring Ethereum, tokens, or another asset if the correct procedure is unclear.
4. Reinstall the latest BitBoxApp and verify the test transaction
- Completely close BitBoxApp 4.37.1 and uninstall it.
- Download and install the latest BitBoxApp from the official BitBoxApp download page. You can also check the latest BitBoxApp release and release notes on GitHub or follow the steps to update the BitBoxApp.
- Connect the BitBox02 and open the receiving account.
- Confirm that the test transaction appears in the new BitBox02 wallet and has the expected destination and amount.
Do not transfer the remaining balance until you have confirmed that the test transaction reached the correct BitBox02 wallet.
5. Transfer the remaining funds
- Generate and verify a new receiving address on the BitBox02 if you do not want to reuse the test address. Save the verified address securely.
- Close and uninstall the latest BitBoxApp.
- Reinstall BitBoxApp 4.37.1 from the official release page.
- Connect and unlock the BitBox01.
- Transfer the remaining balance to the verified BitBox02 address.
- Repeat the process for every account, address type, supported asset, and hidden wallet that contains funds.
6. Finish the migration with the latest BitBoxApp
- Completely close and uninstall BitBoxApp 4.37.1.
- Reinstall the latest BitBoxApp from the official download page.
- Connect the BitBox02 and check every account and asset you migrated.
- Confirm that every expected transaction appears and is confirmed on its respective blockchain.
- Keep the latest BitBoxApp and BitBox02 firmware updated.
The migration is complete only when every expected balance appears in the new BitBox02 wallet. Do not reset, destroy, or discard the BitBox01 or its backup until you have checked every account, asset, and hidden wallet and confirmed that all transfers succeeded.
Recover a BitBox01 backup without the device
If the BitBox01 is lost, broken, or unavailable, recovery may still be possible when you have both:
- The encrypted BitBox01 backup from the microSD card
- The correct backup recovery password
The legacy BitBox01 Backup Center instructions explain how to derive recovery information from the encrypted backup. For a wallet containing real funds, download the approved standalone version and run it on a trusted computer that is completely offline.
Private keys may be exposed
The BitBox01 backup recovery procedure can expose private keys on the computer used for recovery. This bypasses the normal protection of a hardware wallet. After recovering access, transfer the funds to a newly created wallet whose keys have never been exposed to a computer.
Do not enter a real wallet backup into the hosted online Backup Center. If you are unsure how to prepare a safe offline environment, stop and contact BitBox support before entering any wallet information.
A recovered BitBox01 backup still cannot be imported into a BitBox02. Recover access first, then transfer the funds to a new BitBox02 wallet.
Why did BitBox01 reach end of life?
The BitBox01 went on sale in 2016. Sales ended on 12 November 2019, and official product support ended in November 2020.
The BitBox01 used a paired mobile phone as an external display for verifying addresses and transactions. The BitBox02 introduced an integrated trusted display, reducing the complexity and attack surface involved in communicating security information through another device. The BitBox01 end-of-sale and end-of-life announcement provides more background.
End of life means that the BitBox01 no longer receives active product development, firmware updates, or security maintenance. It does not mean that BitBox takes possession of the wallet or that funds are automatically moved or lost.
Frequently asked questions
Are my funds lost because BitBox01 reached end of life?
No. Ending BitBox01 support does not remove or move funds. Funds remain recorded on their respective blockchains. However, access may become more difficult as compatible hardware, software, and operating systems become unavailable. Migrate while you still have working access.
Can I continue using my BitBox01?
A working BitBox01 may still provide access through BitBoxApp 4.37.1, but continued use is not recommended. Neither the device nor the compatible app receives security updates, and future operating systems may not run the old application. Use BitBoxApp 4.37.1 only as a temporary migration tool.
Can I restore my BitBox01 backup on a BitBox02?
No. A BitBox01 microSD card backup cannot be restored on a BitBox02 because the backup formats are different. Create a new wallet on the BitBox02 and transfer the funds. If the BitBox01 is unavailable, recover the BitBox01 backup offline first and then transfer the funds.
What if I used a hidden wallet on my BitBox01?
A BitBox01 hidden wallet is separate from the standard wallet and may hold its own balances. Check and migrate both wallets. You need the correct hidden-wallet password to access the hidden wallet. A different password opens a different wallet, and BitBox cannot determine or recover the original password.
Which BitBox02 edition should I use?
Choose a Bitcoin-only BitBox02 if the BitBox01 wallet contains only Bitcoin and you want a Bitcoin-only device. Choose a Multi edition if you need to migrate supported assets such as Litecoin or Ethereum. Check which assets are supported by BitBox before choosing an edition.
Can BitBox recover my wallet for me?
No. BitBox does not have access to your wallet keys, BitBox01 backup, backup recovery password, private keys, or hidden-wallet password. Support can explain the available recovery procedures, but it cannot reconstruct missing wallet secrets or recover a forgotten password.
