This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough for using your BitBox02 hardware wallet with MyEtherWallet (MEW) to securely manage your Ethereum (ETH), ERC-20 tokens, and assets on other EVM-compatible blockchains.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, please ensure you have the following:

  • A BitBox02 Multi edition hardware wallet.
  • The BitBoxApp installed on your computer, with your BitBox02 already initialized (including your password and wallet backup).
  • The BitBoxBridge downloaded and installed. This background application enables your browser to communicate securely with your BitBox02.

Connect your BitBox02 to MEW

This process establishes a secure connection between your hardware wallet and the MyEtherWallet interface. Ensure the BitBoxApp is completely closed on your computer before you start.

  1. Go to the official MyEtherWallet website and click on Access my wallet.
  1. On the next screen, select the Hardware wallets option.
  1. From the list of supported hardware, click on BitBox02.
  1. Plug your BitBox02 into your computer. Tap either side of the device to select the screen orientation and wake it up.
  2. On the MyEtherWallet page, click the button labeled Unlock BitBox02.
    1. A pop-up window will now appear in your browser.
    2. Select your BitBox02 from the list and click Connect.
  1. Once the device is recognized, enter your BitBox02 password on the device itself.
  1. For the first connection: A unique pairing code will appear on both the MEW website and your BitBox02 screen. Carefully compare them. If they match, confirm the pairing on your BitBox02 device.
  1. You will now see the Select Network and Address window. Here you can choose which of your wallet addresses you wish to view in MEW.
    1. Check the box to accept the Terms.
    2. Click the Access my wallet button.

Your BitBox02 is now securely connected to MyEtherWallet. You can begin using MEW to manage your assets.

How to receive assets securely

To receive ETH or ERC-20 tokens, you must always verify your receiving address on your BitBox02. This crucial step protects you from malware on your computer that could try to trick you into sending funds to a hacker's address.

Follow these steps to ensure your funds arrive safely:

  1. From the main MEW dashboard, locate your wallet address at the top left corner of the page.
    1. You can click the copy icon
    2. or the QR code icon to copy your address.
  1. Before sending any funds, you must verify this is your correct address. In MEW, click the small down-arrow icon next to your address and select View address on BitBox02 from the menu.
  1. Your full Ethereum address will now appear on your BitBox02's screen.
  2. Carefully compare the address displayed on your BitBox02 with the one shown in MEW. Most importantly, compare it with the address you have pasted into the sending wallet or exchange.

If the addresses match exactly, you can safely proceed with the transfer. If they do not match, abort the transaction immediately.

How to send assets

When sending a transaction, you will use your BitBox02 to securely verify and approve the details.

  1. In the left-hand menu of the MEW dashboard, click on Send.
  2. Select the token you wish to send (ETH or an ERC-20 token) from the dropdown menu.
  3. Enter the amount to send and paste the recipient’s address. Always double-check that the address is correct.
  4. Adjust the transaction fee (gas). A higher fee will process your transaction faster. For most users, the Medium or High preset is a good choice.
  5. Click Next to proceed.
  1. Your BitBox02 will now display all transaction details: the recipient address, the amount, and the network fee. Carefully review every detail on the device screen.
  2. If everything is correct, confirm the transaction on your BitBox02. If anything looks wrong, reject it on the device.
  3. Once confirmed, MEW will broadcast the transaction to the network.

Manage other EVM chains with BitBox02 and MEW

The BitBox02 Multi edition is not just for Ethereum. You can use it to secure assets on many other networks that are compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), such as Polygon, Binance Smart Chain (BSC), Avalanche, and more. Your wallet address remains the same across all EVM chains.

Be aware that transacting on any network requires a small amount of that network's native token to pay for transaction fees (gas). For example, you need MATIC for transactions on Polygon.

How to switch networks in MyEtherWallet

By default, MEW will connect to the Ethereum network. To manage assets on another chain, you must switch to it first.

  1. In the top right of the MEW dashboard, you will see a button showing the current network (e.g., Ethereum). Click on it.
  1. A window will open with a list of available networks.
  1. You can scroll or use the search bar to find the network you want to use (e.g., BNB).
  2. Select the desired network. The MEW interface will now refresh and show your balances for that specific chain.

How to recover funds sent to the wrong EVM network

A common mistake is sending assets on one network to your address on another (for example, sending Polygon (MATIC) via the BSC network instead of the Polygon network). Because the address is the same, the funds are not lost, but you need to switch to the correct network to access them.

  1. Identify the correct network: Check the transaction details on a block explorer (like Etherscan, Polygonscan, etc.) to confirm which network the funds were actually sent on.
  2. Connect to MEW: Connect your BitBox02 to MyEtherWallet as usual.
  3. Switch to the correct network: Follow the steps in the section above to switch MEW to the network where your funds were mistakenly sent.
  4. Access your funds: Once you are on the correct network, MEW will display your token balance. You can now send the funds back to the exchange or use a cross-chain bridge to move them to the intended network.

For detailed steps on cross-chain transfers, please refer to MyEtherWallet’s guide: Swap your crypto with MEW Portfolio

Security Reminder: Always double-check that you have selected the correct network in your exchange or sending wallet before you confirm a transaction.
