The BitBox02 hardware wallet is available in two editions: The Multi edition and Bitcoin-only edition. While the devices themselves are identical, their firmware version is not.

The Multi edition supports a variety of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Cardano and over 1500 ERC20 token. You can find a detailed list of all supported coins and tokens on our website. It can also be used as a security key for secure authentication (FIDO U2F), for example with online services.

As the name suggests, the Bitcoin-only edition only supports Bitcoin and nothing else. The firmware does not support other coins or tokens, making it smaller and less complex. This reduces the attack surface and offers a security benefit for users who don't wish to store anything other than bitcoin on their hardware wallet.

Can the edition be changed?

The secure bootloader of the BitBox02 forbids downgrades or edition changes of the firmware version, making it not possible to switch between the Multi and Bitcoin-only firmware

If you feel unsure about which edition to choose, maybe because you're still thinking about storing altcoins as well, it may be better to go for the Multi edition.

If you feel certain about only securing bitcoin with your BitBox02 and want no distractions, the Bitcoin-only edition is probably the right choice for you.

You can explore more details about the two BitBox02 editions on our website.
