The BitBoxApp offers features to help you organize your crypto holdings and understand your transaction history. You can add custom names to your accounts and descriptive labels (notes) to individual transactions. This guide explains these features and provides instructions for using them.

What are account names and transaction labels?

  • Account Names: You can assign custom, recognizable names to your different cryptocurrency accounts within the BitBoxApp (e.g., "BTC Savings", "Ethereum Main", "Daily Spending"). This helps distinguish between accounts managing different assets or purposes.
  • Transaction Labels (Notes): You can add specific text descriptions or notes to individual transactions to remember their purpose or context (e.g., "Payment for services", "Received from Mike", "Exchange withdrawal").

Using these features provides several benefits:

  • Organization: Easily differentiate between accounts and understand transaction purposes.
  • Clarity: See familiar names instead of just account numbers or raw transaction data.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain context for your crypto activity over time.

How to manage names and labels in the BitBoxApp

You can manage account names via the Settings menu and add labels (notes) directly to transactions.

Naming Your Accounts

Follow these steps to assign or change the name of an account:

  1. Navigate to Settings within the BitBoxApp.
  2. Go to the Manage accounts section.
  3. You will see a list of your accounts.
  4. Locate the account you wish to rename and click the Edit button displayed next to its current name.
  5. The "Edit account name" window will appear.
  6. Enter the desired descriptive name for the account in the input field.
  7. Click the Update button.
  8. Done! The account will now be displayed with this custom name throughout the BitBoxApp. This name will also be included if you export your transaction notes (see BIP-329 section).

Labeling Transactions (Adding a 'Note')

Follow these steps to add or edit a label (referred to as a 'Note' in this part of the interface) for a specific transaction:

  1. Select the relevant account from the left sidebar to view its transaction history.
  2. Locate the transaction you wish to label in the list.
  3. Click the magnifying glass icon (🔍) on the right side of that transaction row.
  4. The transaction details window will open.
  5. Identify the field labeled Note.
    1. To add a new label: If no label exists, the field will display 'Add note...'. Click this text.
    2. To edit an existing label: If a label is already present, you will see the text and an edit icon (note and pen 📝) to the right. Click the icon.
  6. Type your desired label text into the field.
  7. Press the Enter key on your keyboard or click the save icon (💾) located to the right of the field.
  8. The label (note) for the transaction is now saved.

Viewing Account Names and Labels

Once saved:

  • Custom account names will appear in the account list (e.g., in the sidebar).
  • Transaction labels (notes) will be displayed within the transaction history and details view.

These make your wallet structure and history easier to interpret at a glance.

Label and Account Name Portability (BIP-329)

Account names and transaction labels enhance organization within the BitBoxApp. Furthermore, the BIP-329 standard facilitates exporting this data, including account names and transaction notes, for potential use in other compatible wallet applications. More details on this standard can be found in our blog post: Import and export wallet labels with BIP-329

Using custom account names and transaction labels (notes) in the BitBoxApp is an effective way to improve clarity and organization. Consistently applying these helps maintain better records and simplifies managing your cryptocurrency assets.
