Your BitBox02 microSD card backup is vital! It holds the key to recovering your cryptocurrency wallet if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged. Creating this backup is one of the first and most important steps after setting up your BitBox02. Let's walk through how easy it is!

1. Prepare your hardware

First, you need to insert the microSD card that came with your BitBox02 (or a compatible one you provide) into the device.

  1. Hold your BitBox02 with the screen facing up towards you.
  2. Position the microSD card with its label also facing up.
  3. Gently slide the card into the slot on the side of the BitBox02 until you feel a slight click. It should sit securely and almost flush with the device casing.

2. Connect and unlock your BitBox02

  1. Connect your BitBox02 to your computer.
  2. Open the BitBoxApp on your computer.
  3. Follow the prompts on the BitBox02 screen and in the app to unlock your device by entering your device password.

Note: If you use the optional passphrase feature and want the backup to correspond to a specific passphrase-protected wallet, make sure you have entered that passphrase to access the wallet before proceeding.

3. Navigate to backup management

Once your device is unlocked and connected to the app:

  1. Click on Settings in the left-hand sidebar of the BitBoxApp.
  2. Select the Manage device tab at the top.
  3. In the "Backups" section, click the Manage backups button.

4. Create the backup

If this is the first backup on this microSD card, the screen will state "There are no backups on this microSD card."

  1. Click the Create backup button.
  2. The BitBoxApp will show a message: "Please follow the instructions on your BitBox02".
  3. Look at your BitBox02 screen and perform the following actions when prompted:
    • Confirm the current date is correct.
    • Enter your device password again using the touch sensors.

5. Confirmation: Backup complete!

Success! Once you've confirmed the password on your device, the BitBoxApp will update automatically. You should now see your newly created backup listed with its:

  • Name
  • Unique ID
  • Creation date and time

Your microSD card backup has been successfully created! Keep this card safe, as it's your key to recovery.

Avoid digital exposure: Never insert your backup microSD card into any device other than your BitBox02 to prevent potential security risks.

Important note: What's in a backup name?

The name assigned to your backup is taken directly from the "BitBox02 name" you set for your device. If you want to give your backup a specific name, you need to change the device name before you create the backup. You can do this in the BitBoxApp under:

Settings > Manage device > Device information (edit the first field, "BitBox02 name").

Alternative backup methods:

In addition to microSD card backups, consider writing down your 24 recovery words:

  • Backup card: Use an ageing-resistant backup card to record your recovery words.
  • Steelwallet: For maximum durability, engrave your recovery words onto a stainless steel plate using a Steelwallet, protecting against fire, water, and corrosion.

By creating multiple backups and storing them securely, you ensure that your cryptocurrency assets remain safe and accessible, even in unforeseen circumstances.
