This guide explains the advanced backup options available during the BitBox02 setup and their security implications.

While the BitBox02 offers flexibility, these options are intended for users with specific needs and a strong understanding of cryptocurrency security.

How to access advanced options

You can find these settings during the initial device setup on the Setup your wallet screen.

  1. Connect your BitBox02 and open the BitBoxApp.
  2. Follow the prompts until you reach the Setup your wallet screen.
  3. Click the Advanced options located directly below the Create wallet button.

The advanced options menu

In the advanced options menu, you will see two choices you can enable.

Skip microSD card backup and write down recovery words instead

This option allows you to manually write down your recovery words instead of saving the backup to the microSD card. You always have the option to create a microSD card backup or view your recovery words later from the device settings after setup is complete.

Create 12-word instead of 24-word seed

By default, the BitBox02 uses a 24-word seed. The app notes that both seed lengths are secure against brute-forcing in practice, but some users may prefer the convenience of the 12-word seed.

Important: Please note that the number of words cannot be changed after creating the wallet.

What to expect after choosing

The setup process will change slightly depending on which option you select.

If you only choose the 12-word option

If you only enable the 12-word seed and do not skip the microSD backup, the setup process remains mostly the same as the standard setup. You will be prompted to insert your microSD card to save the backup file, and the app will guide you through the remaining steps.

If you choose to skip the microSD backup

If you enable the option to skip the microSD backup (for either a 12 or 24-word seed), the final steps will change.

  1. After setting your password, you will be prompted to write down your recovery words.
  1. The BitBox02 will display each word of your recovery phrase directly on the device's screen, not in the BitBoxApp.
  2. After all the words have been shown to you once, the next step requires you to confirm the entire phrase on your BitBox02 device to verify your backup is correct and complete the setup.
