We're thrilled you've chosen the Steelwallet to give your precious recovery words maximum protection! This awesome offline tool uses engraved stainless steel sheets to shield your backup from fire, water, electrical shocks, and corrosion. It's a fantastic way to ensure your crypto assets remain accessible to you, no matter what.

Each Steelwallet sheet is designed to hold 12 recovery words (6 on each side). If you have a 24-word recovery phrase, you'll simply use two sheets. Let's walk through how to get it set up – it's easier than you think!

What you'll need:

Step 1: Get your recovery words ready

Have your list of recovery words handy. Remember, these words come from a standard list called the BIP-39 wordlist. A cool feature of this list is that every word can be identified just by its first four letters! That's why your Steelwallet is cleverly designed for you to punch only the first four letters of each word.

Step 2: Mark the spots for punching

Let's get marking! Grab your marker and one stainless steel sheet.

  • Look at your first recovery word. Let's say it's "escape". You only need the first four letters: "esca".
  • Find the row for the first letter ('E') and the column for the second letter ('S'). Mark the hole where they intersect.
  • Next, find the row for the third letter ('C') and the column for the fourth letter ('A'). Mark that intersecting hole.
  • You've marked your first word! Now, continue this process for the first six words of your recovery phrase.

Step 3: Double-check your marks – accuracy is key!

Before you start punching, take a moment to carefully review the marks you just made for the first six words. Compare them against your recovery word list. It's super important to get this right, so double-checking now saves any potential headaches later!

Step 4: Punch your marks!

Okay, checked everything? Great! Time for the satisfying part – punching the letters.

  • Take the automatic center punch provided in your kit.
  • Place the tip firmly onto the first mark you made.
  • Press down on the punch until it clicks – this creates a permanent indent in the steel.
  • Continue punching all the marks for your first six words.
  • Once the first side is done, carefully flip the steel sheet over.
  • Mark the spots for your next six words (words 7-12) just like you did in Step 2.
  • Double-check these new marks (Step 3 again!).
  • Punch these spots (Step 4 again!).

If you have a 24-word recovery phrase, grab your second steel sheet and repeat Steps 2, 3, and 4 for words 13-18 on one side, and words 19-24 on the other.

Step 5: Store your Steelwallet securely

Congratulations! You've successfully stamped your recovery words onto durable stainless steel. You've given your backup serious resilience!

Now, the final crucial step is to store your Steelwallet sheet(s) in a safe, secure, and private location. Think about somewhere protected where only you can access it, and perhaps consider storing it separately from your hardware wallet.
