This guide explains how to securely wipe your BitBox02 and return it to its original factory settings. A factory reset is necessary if you want to start over with a new wallet, prepare the device for a new owner, or as a required step to {change your device password}.
Before you start
- Resetting your BitBox02 will permanently delete all data from the device, including your private keys.
- You must have a verified, working backup of your wallet before you begin. Without a valid backup, you will lose access to your crypto forever.
- If you use the optional passphrase feature, you must also have your passphrase written down correctly.
- You can learn how to {create and verify your microSD card backup} or {view and verify your 24 recovery words}.
How to reset your BitBox02
There are two ways to perform a factory reset on your BitBox02. You can either use the BitBoxApp settings or trigger the reset by entering an incorrect password multiple times.
Method 1: Reset with incorrect password attempts
This method does not require access to the BitBoxApp settings and is a security feature to protect your device against brute-force attacks.
- Connect your BitBox02 to your computer and open the BitBoxApp.
- When the BitBoxApp prompts you for your device password, deliberately enter the wrong password 10 times.
- After the tenth incorrect attempt, the BitBox02 will automatically reset itself to factory settings.
Method 2: Reset using the BitBoxApp
This method allows you to initiate the reset from the device settings menu inside the BitBoxApp.
- Open the BitBoxApp and connect your BitBox02.
- Unlock the device with your current password.
- In the left sidebar, click on Settings.

- Go to the Manage device tab.

- Scroll to the bottom to find the Expert settings section.
- Click on Factory reset, which is the last option in the list.

- A confirmation window will appear with the warning: “All data will be deleted from this device. That includes your Private Key!”
- Confirm you have a backup by checking the box next to "I have a valid backup".
- Click the red Factory reset device button.

- Follow the final confirmation instructions on your BitBox02 screen to complete the process.
Your BitBox02 is now fully reset and ready to be set up again.
Frequently asked questions
Will a factory reset delete my crypto?
No. Your crypto is stored on the blockchain, not on the BitBox02. A factory reset only deletes the private keys (your access) from the device. As long as you have your verified backup, you can restore your wallet and regain full access to your funds.
What should I do after resetting my BitBox02?
After a reset, the device is like new. You can either restore your existing wallet using your backup or set it up as a completely new wallet, which will generate a new set of 24 recovery words.
I forgot my password and can't access the BitBoxApp settings. How can I reset my device?
You can use Method 1. Deliberately entering the wrong password 10 times will automatically trigger a factory reset. This security feature ensures you can always reset your device, even without the password. Afterward, you can restore your wallet from your backup and set a new password.
