Want to keep your crypto neatly organized? The BitBoxApp makes it easy to create multiple accounts on your BitBox02 hardware wallet. This feature is perfect for separating funds for different purposes, giving you more control and clarity over your digital assets.

Understanding your wallet seed: The foundation of your accounts

It's important to understand that your entire BitBox02 wallet—all your accounts and funds—is secured by your single master seed phrase (also known as recovery words). This seed is the root from which all your individual accounts are deterministically derived.

Here’s the great news:

  • One backup to rule them all: Your existing wallet backup (whether on the microSD card or your written-down recovery words) that you created when you first set up your BitBox02 already covers all accounts you create. You don't need to make a new backup when you add a new account; it's automatically included.
  • Accounts for life: These accounts don’t expire and are always tied to your wallet's seed phrase.

Benefits of using multiple accounts

Using multiple accounts offers several advantages:

  • Better organization: You could have separate accounts for "Savings," "Trading," "Daily Spending," or even manage funds for your children.
  • Independent records: Each account has its own unique:
    • Receive addresses
    • Transaction history
    • Extended Public Key (Xpub), useful for tracking balances with watch-only wallets or for accounting purposes.

Step-by-step: How to create a new account

Ready to add a new account? Here’s how:

  1. Unlock your BitBox02 and open the BitBoxApp.
  2. Go to "Settings" in the BitBoxApp interface.
  3. Select "Manage accounts."
  4. Click the "Add account" button.
  5. Choose the cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin) for which you want to create the new account.
  6. Give the account a recognizable name (e.g., "My BTC Savings," "Ethereum Staking").
  7. Click "Add account."

That's it! Your new account will now appear in the sidebar of the BitBoxApp, ready to use.

Crucial: Restoring and accessing your multiple accounts

Understanding how accounts are restored is key, especially if you set up your BitBox02 on a new computer or restore your wallet from your backup.

  • Initial state: When you first set up the BitBoxApp with your BitBox02 (either as a new setup or after a restore), the app will initially only show the default primary account for each supported cryptocurrency.
  • Rediscovering your accounts: If you had previously created and used multiple accounts (e.g., three Bitcoin accounts), you will need to "tell" the BitBoxApp to find them again. You do this by simply using the "Add account" feature described above for each coin.
  • Deterministic order matters: Accounts are derived from your seed in a specific, unchangeable order.
    • For example, if you had five Bitcoin accounts and your main transactions were on the fifth one, you would need to click "Add account" for Bitcoin four times after the initial default Bitcoin account is shown. The BitBoxApp will then derive and display the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and finally your 5th Bitcoin account, along with its correct transaction history and balance.
    • The third Ethereum account you created will always be the third Ethereum account derived from your seed, and so on.
  • Applies to all coins: This behavior is consistent across all cryptocurrencies supported by the BitBox02, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and others.

By re-adding accounts in this way, you allow the BitBoxApp to deterministically derive the necessary keys and information from your master seed to display your funds and transaction history correctly.

Managing multiple accounts on your BitBox02 is a powerful way to organize your crypto life, all while maintaining the top-tier security of your hardware wallet and a single, simple backup.
