If your BitBox02 hardware wallet is lost, stolen, or no longer functioning, it’s still possible to restore access to your wallet. This guide explains the two secure options available and how to proceed safely.
Important security considerations:
We strongly recommend restoring a BitBox02-created wallet only on another hardware wallet. Avoid using software wallets on computers or smartphones, as they are more vulnerable to attacks.
Option 1: restore from microSD card backup
If you have a microSD card backup from your original BitBox02, you can extract your 24 recovery words using the BitBox backup recovery tool. For detailed instructions, see: How to use the backup recovery tool?
Important: Running this tool on a computer may expose your recovery words to potential malware or keyloggers. Only use this method if:
- You do not have your 24 recovery words written down.
- You cannot access or replace your BitBox02.
Option 2: restore using your 24 recovery words
If you have your 24 recovery words written down, restoring your wallet is simple and safe. For more details, see here: How to display my wallet recovery words?
Steps:
- Get a new hardware wallet (BitBox02 or compatible).
- Choose the “Restore” option during setup.
- Enter your 24 recovery words in the correct order.
Once entered, your wallet will be restored, and you’ll have access to your funds and transaction history.
Summary
- Always prioritize restoring on a hardware wallet.
- Use the backup recovery tool only as a last resort.
- Keep your 24 recovery words secure and private.
