If your BitBox is not detected by the BitBoxApp on Windows, the issue is usually related to the USB cable, USB port, Windows device detection, USB drivers, security software, or the BitBoxApp installation.

This guide helps you check whether Windows detects your BitBox and explains what to do depending on the result.

This article is for Windows users. If you use macOS or Linux, follow the dedicated guide for your operating system.

Before you start

Before troubleshooting your USB connection, make sure that:

Outdated BitBoxApp or firmware versions can prevent the BitBox from being detected correctly, even if the USB connection itself works.

Quick checks

Start with these basic checks. They resolve most USB connection issues.

  1. Try a different USB cable.
  2. Connect the BitBox directly to your Windows computer.
  3. Avoid USB hubs, docking stations, adapters, or extension cables during troubleshooting.
  4. Try a different USB port.
  5. Connect the BitBox so that the screen is facing up.
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. Check whether Windows updates are available. You can follow Microsoft’s guide to install Windows updates.
  8. Test the BitBox on another computer or Android smartphone, if possible.

If the BitBox works on another device, the BitBox itself is most likely working correctly. The issue is probably related to your Windows computer, USB port, adapter, drivers, or software setup.

Check whether Windows detects your BitBox

Even if the BitBoxApp does not show your BitBox, Windows may already recognize it as a connected USB device.

This distinction is important:

  • If Windows does not detect the BitBox, the issue is likely related to the USB cable, USB port, adapter, driver, or physical connection.
  • If Windows does detect the BitBox, but the BitBoxApp does not, the issue is more likely related to the BitBoxApp installation, drivers, permissions, or blocking software.

Check the BitBox in Device Manager

Use Device Manager to check whether Windows recognizes your BitBox.

If you need help opening Device Manager, follow Microsoft’s guide to open Device Manager in Windows.

  1. Connect your BitBox to your Windows computer.
  2. Right-click the Start button.
  3. Click Device Manager.
  4. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  5. Look for USB Composite Device.
  6. Right-click USB Composite Device.
  7. Click Properties.
  8. Open the Details tab.
  9. Select Hardware Ids from the dropdown menu.
  10. Check whether the values include:
VID_03EB
PID_2403

If the hardware IDs include VID_03EB and PID_2403, Windows recognizes your BitBox.

Windows may show several entries called USB Composite Device. Check the hardware IDs to identify the BitBox.

If Windows does not detect the BitBox

If you cannot find a matching USB device with the hardware IDs VID_03EB and PID_2403, Windows does not currently detect the BitBox correctly.

In this case, repeat the physical connection checks carefully:

  1. Use a different USB cable.
  2. Remove any USB hub, dock, adapter, or extension cable.
  3. Try another USB port.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Test the BitBox on another computer or Android smartphone, if possible.

If the BitBox is not detected on any device, contact support and include the steps you already tried.

Update USB drivers

If Windows detects the BitBox inconsistently or shows a warning icon in Device Manager, update your USB drivers.

Microsoft also provides a general guide to update drivers through Device Manager in Windows.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Click Device Manager.
  3. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the relevant USB controller or USB device.
  5. Click Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Follow the instructions shown by Windows.
  8. Restart your computer.

If your computer is managed by your employer or organization, driver updates or USB device access may be restricted. In that case, test the BitBox on a personal computer if possible.

Reinstall the USB device driver

If updating the driver does not help, you can try uninstalling the affected USB device in Device Manager and let Windows reinstall it automatically.

This can help if Windows has stored an incorrect or corrupted device configuration.

  1. Disconnect your BitBox.
  2. Right-click the Start button.
  3. Click Device Manager.
  4. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  5. Right-click the relevant USB device, for example USB Composite Device.
  6. Click Uninstall device.
  7. Confirm the uninstall prompt.
  8. Restart your computer.
  9. Connect your BitBox again.
  10. Wait until Windows detects the device again.

After Windows reinstalls the device, open the BitBoxApp and check whether your BitBox is detected.

Only uninstall the USB device entry, not unrelated system drivers. If you are unsure which entry belongs to your BitBox, check the hardware IDs first.

If Windows detects the BitBox, but the BitBoxApp does not

If Windows detects your BitBox, but the BitBoxApp still does not show it, the USB connection itself is most likely working.

Continue with these steps:

  1. Close the BitBoxApp.
  2. Disconnect your BitBox.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Open the BitBoxApp again.
  5. Reconnect your BitBox.
  6. Temporarily disable antivirus software, firewall tools, VPN tools, or endpoint security software (Windows Security) for testing.
  7. Re-enable your security software immediately after testing.
  8. If disabling security software helps, add the BitBoxApp to the allowed list.
  9. Download and reinstall the latest version of the BitBoxApp.

Only disable security software temporarily for testing. Re-enable it immediately afterward. If it blocks the BitBoxApp, add the BitBoxApp to the allowed list instead of keeping protection disabled.

Check for conflicting software

Some software can interfere with USB device detection or communication. This can include:

  • antivirus software,
  • firewall tools,
  • endpoint security tools,
  • VPN tools,
  • remote desktop tools,
  • virtualization tools,
  • enterprise device management software,
  • or USB security software.

Applications such as Citrix Workspace can also interfere with USB device handling. Make sure such software is fully up to date.

If you use a work-managed computer, USB access may be restricted by your organization.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Is my BitBox defective if it is not recognized on Windows?

In most cases, no. USB connection issues are usually caused by cables, USB ports, adapters, Windows drivers, security software, or the BitBoxApp installation.

Why does Windows detect my BitBox, but the BitBoxApp does not?

If Windows detects the BitBox but the BitBoxApp does not, the issue is usually related to the BitBoxApp installation, drivers, permissions, or software that blocks USB communication.

What are the BitBox hardware IDs on Windows?

The BitBox should appear with the following hardware IDs:

VID_03EB
PID_2403

These IDs help confirm that Windows recognizes the connected USB device as a BitBox.

Why do I see several USB Composite Device entries?

Windows may show multiple connected USB devices as USB Composite Device. Open the Details tab and check the Hardware Ids to identify the BitBox.

Should I update or reinstall the USB driver?

Start by updating the driver through Device Manager. If this does not help, uninstall the affected USB device and restart your computer. Windows should reinstall the device automatically when you reconnect your BitBox.

Can I lose my coins because of a USB connection issue?

No. Your coins are not stored on the BitBox. They are recorded on the blockchain. As long as your recovery words are safely backed up, your funds are not at risk because of a USB connection issue.

What does it mean if my BitBox works on another device?

This usually means that the BitBox itself is working correctly. The issue is most likely related to your Windows computer, USB port, adapter, drivers, or software setup.

When should I contact support?

Contact support if you have tried different cables, ports, and devices, checked whether Windows detects the BitBox, reinstalled the BitBoxApp, and the issue still persists.
