Wallet labels let you privately rename accounts and add notes to transactions in the BitBoxApp. They are stored locally and are never written to the blockchain.

Wallet labels make it easier to recognize accounts and remember the purpose of previous transactions, especially if you use multiple accounts over a long period. This article explains how to create, update, view, and search them in the BitBoxApp.

What are wallet labels?

In the BitBoxApp, wallet labels include:

  • Account names: Custom names such as “Bitcoin savings” or “Daily spending” that help you distinguish accounts.
  • Transaction notes: Private descriptions such as “Rent” or “Exchange withdrawal” that help you identify transactions later.

Both account names and transaction notes are wallet labels and behave the same way: they remain private, stay off the blockchain, and can be exported using BIP-329.

Private organization, not blockchain data

Wallet labels are visible only in wallet applications where you have added or imported them. Renaming an account or changing a transaction note does not change the corresponding account, address, or transaction on the blockchain.

Rename an account in the BitBoxApp

  1. Open the BitBoxApp.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to Manage accounts.
  4. Find the account you want to rename.

Add or edit a transaction note

  1. In the BitBoxApp sidebar, select the account containing the transaction.
  2. Find the transaction in the transaction history.

  2. Close the transaction details window when you are finished.

The BitBoxApp saves the note without an additional confirmation step. The note is now displayed with the transaction.

View and search wallet labels

Account names appear in the account list and wherever the BitBoxApp refers to the account. Transaction notes appear in the transaction history and transaction details. Transaction notes become searchable immediately after the BitBoxApp saves them.

You can also enter all or part of a transaction note in the search bar for the selected account. Learn more about how to view and search your transaction history in the BitBoxApp.

Back up your wallet labels

Wallet labels are not included in your recovery words or microSD backup. Export your wallet labels regularly if you rely on them to organize your wallet. A separate export lets you restore the labels after reinstalling the BitBoxApp or transfer them to another wallet that supports Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 329 (BIP-329).

Wallet labels are not included in wallet backups

Recovering your wallet from recovery words or a microSD card does not restore account names or transaction notes. Losing your labels does not affect your funds, but the labels cannot be recovered without a separate backup.

To create or restore a portable .jsonl backup, follow the steps to import and export wallet labels with BIP-329.

For more technical background about label privacy, portability, and the BIP-329 format, read the BitBox blog post about importing and exporting wallet labels with BIP-329.

Frequently asked questions

Are wallet labels public?

No. Wallet labels remain local metadata and are never stored on the blockchain. An exported label file contains a portable copy of this information, so keep exported label files confidential.

Do wallet labels affect my funds?

No. Renaming an account or changing a transaction note does not change your addresses, transactions, balances, or access to your funds.

Can I use my wallet labels in another wallet?

Yes. Wallet labels can be imported into another wallet that supports Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 329 (BIP-329). First export the labels from the BitBoxApp, then import the .jsonl file into the compatible wallet.
