This article explains which coins, tokens, and networks are supported by BitBox, and whether they can be managed directly in the BitBoxApp or require a compatible external wallet.

In all cases, your private keys remain secured by your BitBox device.

Before you start

BitBox devices are available in two editions:

  • BitBox Multi editions support Bitcoin and selected altcoins, tokens, and compatible external wallet integrations.
  • BitBox Bitcoin-only editions support Bitcoin only and do not support altcoins or tokens.

Both the BitBox02 and BitBox02 Nova are available as Multi and Bitcoin-only editions:

This article applies primarily to BitBox Multi editions. If you use a Bitcoin-only edition, only Bitcoin is supported.

How coin support works

BitBox supports coins, tokens, and networks in two ways:

  • Native support in the BitBoxApp: The coin or token is visible and manageable directly in the BitBoxApp.
  • Extended support via external wallets: Your BitBox device secures the private keys, while a compatible third-party wallet provides the interface.

Both methods keep your private keys secured by your BitBox device.

Coins and tokens supported directly in the BitBoxApp

The following coins and tokens can be managed directly in the BitBoxApp, without using any additional wallet software:

  • Bitcoin (BTC)
  • Litecoin (LTC)
  • Ethereum (ETH) on Ethereum mainnet
    • A curated selection of popular ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum

Native support means these coins and tokens are fully visible and usable directly in the BitBoxApp interface.

ERC-20 tokens not shown in the BitBoxApp

Not all ERC-20 tokens are displayed in the BitBoxApp by default.

If an ERC-20 token is not visible in the BitBoxApp, this does not necessarily mean it is unsupported by BitBox. It usually means that a compatible external wallet is required.

To manage these tokens, connect your BitBox device to a compatible external wallet.

EVM networks such as Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism

EVM-compatible networks are blockchains that use the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Examples include:

  • Polygon
  • Arbitrum
  • Optimism
  • Other EVM-compatible networks

These networks are not managed directly in the BitBoxApp.

To manage coins or tokens on EVM-compatible networks, connect your BitBox device to a compatible external wallet, such as:

Cardano (ADA)

Cardano is supported by BitBox, but it is not managed directly inside the BitBoxApp.

To manage Cardano (ADA), connect your BitBox device to a compatible external wallet:

Security when using external wallets

  • Even when using an external wallet, your private keys never leave your BitBox device.
  • External wallets act only as an interface.
  • All transactions must still be verified and confirmed on the BitBox device screen.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between coins, tokens, assets, and networks?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they do not always mean the same thing:

  • Coin: Usually refers to the native asset of a blockchain, such as Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), Ethereum (ETH), or Cardano (ADA).
  • Token: Usually refers to an asset issued on an existing network, such as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.
  • Asset: A general term that can refer to both coins and tokens.
  • Network: The blockchain on which a coin or token exists, such as Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, or Cardano.

Many users simply say “coin” when asking about any cryptocurrency, token, or asset. This article therefore uses “coin” as the main term, while also explaining the technical differences where relevant.

Why isn’t my token listed in the BitBoxApp?

The BitBoxApp natively supports the most widely used coins and a curated selection of ERC-20 tokens.

If a token is not listed in the BitBoxApp, it can often still be managed securely by connecting your BitBox device to a compatible external wallet.

Is it safe to use a third-party wallet with BitBox?

Yes. Your private keys are never exposed to your computer, browser, or external wallet software.

The external wallet provides the interface, while your BitBox device keeps the private keys secure. All sensitive actions must still be verified and confirmed directly on the BitBox device screen.

Can I use my Ethereum address on other networks like Polygon?

Yes. The same Ethereum address can be used across EVM-compatible networks.

However, these networks are not managed directly in the BitBoxApp. To interact with networks such as Polygon, Arbitrum, or Optimism, you need to use a compatible external wallet.

Are Solana (SOL) or XRP supported?

No. Solana (SOL) and XRP are currently not supported by BitBox.

These networks use different architectures and are not compatible with the currently supported BitBox firmware or wallet integrations.

Why doesn’t BitBox natively support every coin?

BitBox prioritizes security, stability, and a simple user experience.

Adding native support for every blockchain would increase firmware complexity and introduce additional security risks. By keeping native support focused, BitBox remains robust, open source, and easier to audit.

At the same time, compatible external wallets provide secure access to additional coins, tokens, and networks without exposing your private keys.
