This article explains which cryptocurrencies you can manage with your BitBox02 hardware wallet. It clearly distinguishes between assets that are managed directly in the BitBoxApp and those that require a compatible external wallet.

Before you start

Please ensure you know which edition of the BitBox02 you are using:

This article applies primarily to the BitBox02 Multi.

How coin support works

The BitBox02 is designed with a strong security focus. To balance security and usability, asset support works in two distinct ways:

  • Native in-app support: Assets are visible and manageable directly inside the BitBoxApp.
  • Extended support via external wallets: The BitBox02 secures the keys, while a trusted third-party wallet provides the user interface.

Both methods provide the same level of key security.

Native in-app support (BitBoxApp)

The following assets can be managed directly in the BitBoxApp, without using any additional wallet software:

  • Bitcoin (BTC)
  • Litecoin (LTC)
  • Ethereum (ETH) on Ethereum mainnet
    • A curated selection of popular ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum.

Native support means these assets are fully visible and usable directly in the BitBoxApp interface.

ERC-20 tokens not shown in the BitBoxApp

Not all ERC-20 tokens are displayed in the BitBoxApp by default.

  • If an ERC-20 token is not visible in the BitBoxApp, this does not mean it is unsupported by the BitBox02.
  • It means that a compatible external wallet is required to interact with it.

To manage ERC-20 tokens that are not natively shown, you must use an external wallet (see below).

EVM-compatible networks (Polygon, Arbitrum, etc.)

EVM-compatible networks are blockchains that use the Ethereum Virtual Machine, such as:

  • Polygon
  • Arbitrum
  • Optimism
  • Other EVM chains

These networks are not managed directly in the BitBoxApp.

To manage assets on any EVM-compatible network, you must connect your BitBox02 to a compatible external wallet, such as:

Cardano (ADA)

Cardano is supported by the BitBox02, but not managed inside the BitBoxApp.

To manage Cardano (ADA), you must use an external wallet:

Security when using external wallets

  • Even when using an external wallet, your private keys never leave the BitBox02.
  • External wallets act only as an interface.
  • All transactions must still be verified and confirmed on the BitBox02 device screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn’t my token listed in the BitBoxApp?

The BitBoxApp natively supports only the most widely used assets and a curated selection of ERC-20 tokens.
If a token is not listed, it can usually still be managed securely by connecting your BitBox02 to a compatible external wallet.

Is it safe to use a third-party wallet with my BitBox02?

Yes. The BitBox02 is designed so that your private keys are never exposed to your computer or the external wallet software.
All sensitive actions must be confirmed directly on the BitBox02 device.

Can I use my Ethereum address on other networks like Polygon?

Yes. The same Ethereum address can be used across EVM-compatible networks.
However, interacting with these networks requires a compatible external wallet.

Are Solana (SOL) or XRP supported?

No. Solana (SOL) and XRP are currently not supported by the BitBox02.
These networks use fundamentally different architectures and are not compatible with the BitBox02 firmware or supported wallet integrations at this time.

Why doesn’t the BitBox02 natively support every blockchain?

Our approach to coin support prioritizes security, stability, and a simple user experience above all else. Adding new blockchains natively increases the complexity of the firmware and introduces additional potential security risks.

By deliberately keeping native support focused, we ensure that the BitBox02 remains robust, fully open source, and easy to audit. At the same time, compatible external wallets provide secure access to the broader crypto ecosystem, without ever exposing your private keys.

This way, we combine maximum on-device security with flexibility when interacting with a wide range of networks and assets.
