This guide shows you how to install BitBoxBridge, a small background application required to connect your BitBox02 hardware wallet to supported third-party web wallets.

BitBoxBridge is only needed when a supported web wallet requires it to communicate with your BitBox02. The BitBoxBridge runs in the background after installation.

Important: Close the BitBoxApp before connecting your BitBox02 to a web wallet. The BitBox02 can only connect to one application at a time.

Step 1: Download BitBoxBridge

Download the correct BitBoxBridge installer for your operating system from the official BitBox download page.

On the download page, scroll down until you find the Download BitBoxBridge section. There you can download the installer for Windows, macOS, or Linux.

Advanced users can also find the installer files and source code in the official BitBoxBridge GitHub repository.

Security note: Only download BitBoxBridge from the official BitBox website or the official BitBoxSwiss GitHub repository. Do not install files from unknown sources.

Step 2: Run the installer

After downloading the installer, open the file and follow the installation steps for your operating system.

If the file is downloaded as a compressed file, unpack it first before starting the installation.

Windows

Double-click the downloaded .exe installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Depending on your Windows settings, you may need to confirm the installation as administrator.

macOS

Open the downloaded .pkg installer and follow the guided installation steps.

Depending on your macOS security settings, you may need to confirm that you want to open the installer.

Linux

Install the downloaded package with your distribution’s package manager.

For example:

  • Ubuntu / Debian: install the .deb package
  • Fedora / CentOS: install the .rpm package

After installation, BitBoxBridge should start automatically and run in the background whenever you start your computer.

Note: The exact installation steps can differ slightly depending on your operating system, security settings, and Linux distribution.

Step 3: Verify that BitBoxBridge is running

After installation, you can check whether BitBoxBridge is running correctly in your browser.

Open your browser and enter one of the following addresses:

http://127.0.0.1:8178

or

http://localhost:8178

If BitBoxBridge is running correctly, a page should load with the message:

If you see this message, the installation was successful.

Tip: If the page does not load, restart your computer and check the address again.

Step 4: Connect your BitBox02 to a web wallet

Once BitBoxBridge is installed and running, you can connect your BitBox02 to a supported third-party web wallet.

Before connecting:

  1. Close the BitBoxApp.
  2. Open the supported web wallet in your browser.
  3. Follow the connection process in the web wallet to connect your hardware wallet.
  4. When prompted, connect and unlock your BitBox02.

Important: During the connection process, you will never be asked for your recovery words. The web wallet connects to your BitBox02 through the keystore, not by entering your recovery words. If a website asks for your recovery words, stop immediately.

The BitBox02 can only connect to one application at a time. If the BitBoxApp is still open, the web wallet may not be able to connect to your BitBox02.

If BitBoxBridge does not work

If BitBoxBridge is installed but the connection still does not work, first check whether BitBoxBridge is running by opening:

http://127.0.0.1:8178

If the page does not load, restart your computer and try again.

If the issue continues, follow our BitBoxBridge troubleshooting guide.

You can also uninstall and reinstall BitBoxBridge. For step-by-step instructions, see our BitBoxBridge uninstall guide.

Recommended next step: If BitBoxBridge does not start or the browser cannot connect to it, reinstalling BitBoxBridge is often the cleanest way to reset the setup.

Verify the checksum

If you want to verify the downloaded file, calculate the checksum before unpacking or installing it.

Use the checksum of the downloaded file itself, for example the .zip, .exe, .pkg, .deb, .rpm, or other downloaded installer file.

You can compare it with the checksum shown on the official download page.

Advanced security check: Checksum verification helps confirm that the downloaded file was not changed or corrupted before installation.
