If you want to update your BitBox02 device password for enhanced security, this guide will walk you through the current and recommended process.
This guide applies to the device password, which unlocks your BitBox02.
It does not apply to the optional passphrase feature.
Before you start
Before changing your device password, make sure the following requirements are met:
- You are using the latest version of the BitBoxApp
- Your BitBox02 firmware is up to date
- You know your current device password
If you no longer know your device password, you won’t be able to change it directly.
In that case, a factory reset and wallet restore is required (see FAQ below).
Steps to change your device password
- Open the BitBoxApp.
- Connect your BitBox02 and unlock it using your current device password.
- Go to Settings in the left sidebar.
- Select Manage device, then go to Device settings.

- Click Change device password.
The BitBoxApp will prompt you to follow the instructions on your BitBox02.

- On the BitBox02 screen, confirm that you want to proceed.
- Enter your current device password on the BitBox02.
- Set your new device password.
- Repeat the new password to confirm it.
- If everything was entered correctly, you will see “Success” on the BitBox02 display.
- The BitBoxApp will confirm that the password was changed successfully. Click OK to finish.

If you enter the wrong current device password, the BitBox will show an error.
Simply restart the process and try again.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is the device password the same as the optional passphrase?
No.
The device password unlocks your physical BitBox02.
The optional passphrase is an advanced feature that creates separate, hidden wallets derived from the same backup. See here for more details: Device password vs. Optional passphrase
This guide does not apply to the optional passphrase.
Do I still need to reset my BitBox02 to change the device password?
No.
With the latest BitBoxApp and firmware versions, you can change your device password directly in the app as long as you know the current password.
What if I forgot my device password?
If you forgot your device password, it cannot be recovered.
In this case, you must:
- Perform a factory reset of your BitBox02
- Restore your wallet from a backup (microSD card or recovery words)
- Set a new device password during the setup process
