Losing access to your crypto can be stressful, but with your BitBox02 microSD card backup, getting back into your wallet is straightforward! This guide will walk you through restoring your wallet step-by-step using your backup.

Step 1: Prepare your BitBox02 and microSD card

Before you begin, ensure you have the correct microSD card containing your wallet backup.

  1. Hold your BitBox02 with the screen facing upwards.
  2. Carefully insert your backup microSD card into the slot, ensuring the card's label is facing up.
  3. Push the card gently until you feel a slight resistance and it clicks into place. Don't force it.

Step 2: Connect to the BitBoxApp

  1. Open the BitBoxApp on your computer.
  2. Connect your BitBox02 to your computer.

Step 3: Pair your BitBox02

  1. The BitBoxApp will show "Verify pairing code" and display a code.
  1. Check the screen on your BitBox02 – it should show the same pairing code.
  2. If the codes match, confirm by tapping the top right sensor area on your BitBox02.
  3. Click "Continue" in the BitBoxApp.

Step 4: Select the restore option

  1. On the main screen in the BitBoxApp, you'll see options on the left ("Create wallet") and right ("Restore").
  1. Under the "Restore" section, click the button labeled "Restore from my microSD card".

Note: You will see "Advanced Options" on the left. These are for different setup processes, like creating a new wallet with 12 words or skip the microSD backup, which we aren't using in this guide.

Step 5: Choose the backup file

  1. A new window will appear in the BitBoxApp displaying the backup files found on your microSD card.
  1. Usually, there's only one file. If you have multiple backups saved, carefully select the specific backup file you want to use.
  2. Click "Restore".

Step 6: Confirm the restore on your B itBox02

  1. Look at your BitBox02 screen. It will ask: "Restore backup?".
  2. Confirm by tapping the sensor on the BitBox02.
  3. The device will then display the name and ID of the backup file.
  4. Compare this information with what's shown in the BitBoxApp to ensure they match.
  5. Confirm again on the BitBox02.
  6. The BitBox02 will ask you to confirm the current date. Check it and confirm.

Step 7: Set your device password

  1. You will now be prompted directly on the BitBox02 device to set a password.
  2. Enter a secure password using the device's sensors. We strongly recommend using at least 4 characters!
  3. Confirm your chosen password on the device.

Step 8: Access your restored wallet

  1. The BitBoxApp will now show a confirmation message indicating the restore was successful.
  2. Read carefully the given information and click "Get started".
  3. That's it! You now have full access to the wallet you just restored from your microSD card backup.

Important Note about Passphrases (Optional Feature)

Remember: The microSD card backup does not store your optional passphrase (often called the "25th word").

If you previously secured accounts using a passphrase, you need to:

  1. Re-enable the passphrase feature in the BitBoxApp settings after restoring.
  2. Enter the correct passphrase when prompted to access those specific passphrase-protected accounts.

Your standard accounts (without a passphrase) will be accessible immediately after the restore.
