To install the BitBoxApp on your Mac, download the macOS disk image, copy the app into Applications, and open it from there. You can complete the installation before your BitBox arrives; connecting and setting up the device comes afterward.

Before you begin

Check that your Mac meets the BitBoxApp system requirements. The installation steps are the same for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Depending on your Mac's configuration, you may need administrator permission to copy the app into Applications.

Installation never requires wallet secrets

You do not need a wallet backup or microSD card to install the BitBoxApp. If a website, app, or person asks for recovery words or other wallet secrets during installation, stop. Never enter them on your computer or share them with Support.

Download the BitBoxApp

Open the official BitBoxApp download page and select macOS. Wait for the file ending in .dmg to finish downloading. This disk image contains the app you will copy to your Mac.

If you want to verify the download, do so before opening the DMG:

If either check fails, do not open or install the file. Follow the failure guidance in the verification article you used.

Install and open the BitBoxApp

The following steps copy the app from the disk image into Applications. If you are replacing an existing installation, quit the BitBoxApp first.

  1. In Finder, locate the downloaded .dmg file, usually in Downloads, and double-click it. The disk image opens in a Finder window.
  2. Drag the BitBoxApp from the disk image into the Applications folder in Finder. Wait for copying to finish. If macOS asks whether to replace an existing BitBoxApp, select Replace; you do not need to delete the older app first. If macOS requests permission to copy the app, use an administrator account authorized to install software on this Mac.
  3. In Finder, open Applications and double-click the BitBoxApp there. Open this installed copy rather than the app inside the disk image.
  4. If macOS says the app was downloaded from the internet and asks whether you want to open it, select Open only if this is the BitBoxApp you downloaded from the official page. If the message instead says the developer cannot be verified, Apple cannot check for malicious software, or the app is damaged or will damage your computer, stop here and use the guidance below.

Installation is complete when the BitBoxApp opens normally from Applications. You can leave your BitBox disconnected until you are ready to use it. If you were updating an existing installation, follow Update the BitBoxApp to confirm the installed version.

If installation or opening fails

If the DMG will not open, copying fails, or macOS blocks the app, follow BitBoxApp installation fails on macOS and choose the section matching the exact message. Do not disable macOS security protections or override a damaged-app or malware warning to complete installation.

If the problem remains unresolved or you are unsure what a security warning means, contact BitBox Support with your macOS version, the downloaded filename, the exact message, and whether the problem occurs when opening the DMG, copying the app, or opening it from Applications.

Start using your BitBox

For a new device, continue with Set up your BitBox02 with a microSD card backup. If your BitBox is already set up, connect it and unlock it on the device.

Installing the BitBoxApp does not update the firmware on your BitBox. If the app offers a firmware update after you connect your device, follow How to update the BitBox02 firmware.
