Bittr lets you buy Bitcoin by bank transfer and receive it directly on an address secured by your BitBox. This guide walks you through verifying your email address, entering your bank account details, authorizing a Bitcoin receiving address using Address Ownership Proof, and completing the bank transfer.
The purchase consists of four steps: verify your email address, enter the IBAN you will send the bank transfer from, authorize a Bitcoin receiving address with your BitBox, and then send the bank transfer using the payment details shown by Bittr.
Who is responsible for the purchase?
Bittr is an independent Bitcoin purchase service. Shift Crypto provides the BitBox and the BitBoxApp, but does not process the bank transfer, exchange fiat currency for Bitcoin, set Bittr limits, or provide Bittr support.
Before you begin
- Start the purchase on the official Bittr website: https://getbittr.com/.
- Install the latest version of the BitBoxApp.
- Have your BitBox ready and make sure you're using the latest firmware version. If an update is available, follow the guide to update your BitBox firmware.
- Have access to the email address and European IBAN you want to use for the purchase.
If your BitBox is not set up yet, follow the guide to set up your BitBox with a microSD card backup first.
1. Verify your email address
- Open getbittr.com.
- Start the Bitcoin purchase flow.
- Enter the email address you want to use for the Bittr order.
- Click Send verification email.

- Choose whether you want to receive Bittr's optional Bitcoin self-custody checklist.

- Check your inbox for the Bittr verification email.
- Open the email and click the verification link to continue the order on getbittr.com.

If the verification email does not arrive, check your spam or junk folder.
2. Enter your IBAN
- Enter the IBAN of the bank account you will use to send the EUR bank transfer.
- Click Next Step.

Bittr only supports IBANs within Europe. Use the same bank account for the transfer that you entered in this step.
3. Choose BitBox as your wallet
- On the Which wallet do you use? screen, select BitBox.

Bittr may ask whether you want to use a new address for each purchase or one permanent address.
- New address for each buy: Bittr can derive a fresh receiving address for future purchases. This avoids address reuse, but Bittr can see transactions that belong to the shared account information.
- One permanent address: Bittr uses one Bitcoin receiving address for future bank transfers. This is simpler, but reuses the same address.
Address-sharing privacy
Sharing account information lets Bittr derive receiving addresses and see transactions associated with that shared Bitcoin account. It does not give Bittr access to your private keys or to your whole wallet. For better separation, use a dedicated Bitcoin account for Bittr purchases.
The following steps demonstrate the one-address workflow.
4. Authorize a Bitcoin address with your BitBox
- When Bittr asks you to provide a Bitcoin address, click the step that opens the BitBoxApp.
- If your browser asks whether getbittr.com may open the BitBoxApp, click Open BitBox.

- In the BitBoxApp, review the Address request from GetBittr.
- Click Continue.

- If prompted, connect your BitBox to continue.

- Unlock your BitBox with the device password.

- Select the Bitcoin account that should provide the receiving address.
- Click Next.

- On your BitBox, confirm that the coin is Bitcoin.
- Compare the complete Bitcoin address shown on the BitBox with the address shown in the BitBoxApp.
- If the address matches, confirm it on the BitBox.
- Compare the message shown on the BitBox with the message shown in the BitBoxApp.
- If the message matches, touch both corners of your BitBox to sign the message.
The signed message proves to Bittr that you control the Bitcoin address without revealing your private keys. This verification uses the Address Ownership Proof (AOP) protocol, allowing Bittr to verify ownership of the receiving address securely.
- When the BitBoxApp shows Address successfully sent, click Done.

5. Make the bank transfer
Return to the Bittr order page. Bittr now shows the bank-transfer details for your order.
- Carefully review the payment description, IBAN, account holder, address, and BIC shown by Bittr.
- Use these details in your banking app or online banking portal.
- Make sure the payment description is copied exactly. Bittr uses it to allocate your transfer to the correct order.

You can also switch to the QR Code tab and scan the QR code with a banking app if your bank supports it.

Check Bittr's current limits and fees
Transfer limits, exchange rates, and fees can change. Before sending the bank transfer, check the current limit and fee information shown by Bittr in your order flow.
If you plan to purchase larger Bitcoin amounts, Bittr also explains how larger purchases work in their article about buying Bitcoin without limits.
- After you have sent the bank transfer, click I completed my bank payment.

Bank transfers can take up to a few business days. After Bittr receives the transfer, Bittr sends the Bitcoin equivalent to the address you authorized with your BitBox.

Frequently asked questions
Does Bittr get access to my private keys?
No. Your private keys stay secured by your BitBox. Your BitBox signs a message to prove that you control the Bitcoin address, but it never shares the private keys.
Which Bitcoin account should I use for Bittr purchases?
Use a dedicated Bitcoin account for Bittr purchases whenever possible. This improves privacy and keeps your transaction history cleaner, especially if you choose an option that lets Bittr derive new addresses from the selected account.
Can I close the BitBoxApp after authorizing my Bitcoin address?
Yes. Once the BitBoxApp confirms that the Bitcoin address was successfully sent to Bittr, you can close the BitBoxApp. The remaining purchase process takes place between your bank and Bittr.
Why is the payment description important?
Bittr uses the payment description to match your bank transfer to your order. Copy it exactly as shown in the Bittr order flow.
