If you want to update your BitBox02 device password for enhanced security, this guide will walk you through the necessary steps.  It's important to understand that you cannot simply edit the password. For security reasons, changing it requires you to reset the device and then restore your wallet from your backup, at which point you can set a new password.

This guide is for the main device password, which you enter to unlock your BitBox02. It does not apply to the optional passphrase feature.

Before you start

This is the most critical step. Before you reset your BitBox02, you must have a working and verified backup of your wallet.  Without it, you will lose access to your funds. Your backup can be:

  • Your microSD card backup.
  • Your 24 recovery words written down.

How to verify your backup

Restoring from the microSD card is the fastest and easiest method.

Steps to change your device password

Once you have confirmed you have a working backup, you are ready to begin.

  1. Reset your BitBox02. You must perform a factory reset on your device. For detailed instructions, please follow our complete guide: How to reset the BitBox02 to factory settings.
  2. Restore your wallet. After the reset is complete, the BitBoxApp will guide you through the setup process. Select the option to restore a wallet from backup. You can use either your microSD card or your 24 recovery words.
  3. Set your new password. During the restoration process, you will be prompted to "Set device password". Enter your new password and confirm it.

That's it! Your BitBox02 is now secured with your new password.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the device password the same as the optional passphrase?

No. The device password unlocks your physical BitBox02. The optional passphrase is an advanced feature that creates separate, hidden wallets.  This guide does not apply to the passphrase.

Why do I have to reset my device to change the password?

This is an important security measure. It ensures that someone who gains temporary access to your unlocked device cannot change the password and lock you out of your own wallet. The process guarantees that only the person with the wallet backup (the true owner) can set or change the password.
