Install the BitBoxApp on a supported Windows computer using the official Windows installer. You can download, install, and open the app without connecting your BitBox.

Already have the BitBoxApp installed? Running the latest Windows installer normally updates your existing installation. If you want to check your installed version first, follow the BitBoxApp update guide.

Before you install

Recovery words are not required

Installing or updating the BitBoxApp never requires your recovery words or microSD card backup. If a website, application, or person asks for them during installation, stop and do not share them.

Download the BitBoxApp installer

  1. Open the official BitBoxApp download page.
  2. Select Windows and download the .exe installer.
  3. Wait until your browser confirms that the download is complete before opening the file.

If Microsoft Edge interrupts the download, Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer, or Microsoft Defender reports a threat, do not disable the security feature. Follow the Windows download and installation troubleshooting guide for the message you see.

Optional: Verify the downloaded installer

Before opening the installer, you can compare its SHA-256 checksum with the Windows checksum published on the official BitBoxApp download page.

Advanced users can also verify the BitBoxApp signature to confirm that the downloaded installer was signed by Shift Crypto and was not modified after signing. Verify the downloaded .exe file before opening or installing it.

Install the BitBoxApp

  1. Open the downloaded .exe installer.
  2. If Windows asks whether you want to allow the installer to make changes to your device, confirm that any displayed publisher information identifies Shift Crypto AG, then select Yes.

If Windows displays a different publisher or you are unsure about the file, select No and follow the Windows download and installation troubleshooting guide.

  1. Follow the installation instructions displayed by Windows.
  2. Open the BitBoxApp after the installation finishes.

Installation complete

The installation is complete when the BitBoxApp opens normally.
