The BitBoxApp allows you to view the Bitcoin addresses that were already used in each of your accounts. This can be useful when you want to check where funds were received, copy a past address, or sign a message with a specific address.

Used addresses are shown separately for receive addresses and change addresses. This helps you understand which addresses were shared with others and which addresses were created automatically by the BitBoxApp for Bitcoin change.

Before you begin

Make sure you have:

  • The newest BitBoxApp installed
  • Your BitBox02 connected and unlocked
  • Access to the Bitcoin account you want to check

Account-specific address history
Used addresses are shown per account. If you use multiple Bitcoin accounts in the BitBoxApp, each account has its own receive addresses, change addresses, and address history.

How to open used addresses

  1. Open the BitBoxApp.
  2. Connect your BitBox02.
  3. Unlock your BitBox02.
  4. Select the account whose used addresses you want to view.
  5. Click Account information.
  6. Click View used addresses.

You will now see the Used addresses view for the selected account.

What you see in used addresses

At the top of the page, the BitBoxApp shows that you are viewing all used addresses for the selected account. You can also search for a specific address if you are looking for one particular entry.

The used addresses view is divided into two tabs:

  • Receive addresses
  • Change addresses

Receive addresses

The Receive addresses tab shows addresses that were used to receive funds.

For each receive address, you can see:

  • The Bitcoin address
  • When the address was last used
  • The last time funds were received on that address

You can click an address to expand its details.

After expanding an address, you can:

  • Copy the address
  • Sign a message with this address

Message signing
Signing a message allows you to prove that you control a specific Bitcoin address without making a transaction. This can be useful if an exchange or service asks you to verify address ownership.

Change addresses

The Change addresses tab shows addresses that received Bitcoin change from your own transactions.

When you send Bitcoin, your wallet often spends one or more existing coins, also called UTXOs. If the amount being spent is larger than the amount you want to send, the remaining amount is returned to your wallet as change. The BitBoxApp creates change addresses automatically for this purpose.

For a more detailed explanation, read our blog article about what a UTXO is.

Change addresses are normal
Change addresses are created automatically by the BitBoxApp when needed. They are part of how Bitcoin transactions work and do not mean that your funds were sent to someone else.

Why receive addresses and change addresses are separated

Receive addresses and change addresses have different purposes:

Address type What it is used for
Receive address An address you can share with someone to receive Bitcoin
Change address An address automatically created by your wallet to receive change from your own transaction

This separation helps you better understand your transaction history and how funds moved within your wallet.

When viewing used addresses is useful

Viewing used addresses can help when you want to:

  • Check whether a specific address was used
  • Find an address where you received Bitcoin
  • Copy a previously used address
  • Sign a message with a specific address
  • Understand which addresses were used for change

Address reuse
For better privacy, avoid reusing Bitcoin receive addresses when possible. The BitBoxApp automatically generates new receive addresses to help protect your privacy.

FAQ

Can I receive Bitcoin again on a used address?

Yes, technically you can receive Bitcoin on a used address again. However, for better privacy, it is recommended to use a new receive address whenever possible.

Why do I see change addresses?

Change addresses are created automatically when your wallet receives Bitcoin change from one of your own transactions. This is normal Bitcoin wallet behavior.

Are change addresses controlled by my BitBox02?

Yes. Change addresses shown in the BitBoxApp belong to your wallet and are controlled by your BitBox02.

Can I copy a used address?

Yes. You can expand a used address and copy it from the address details.

Can I sign a message with any used address?

You can sign a message with supported addresses shown in the BitBoxApp. This is useful when you need to prove that you control a specific address.

Does viewing used addresses expose my recovery words?

No. Viewing used addresses does not expose your recovery words or private keys. Your private keys remain protected by your BitBox02.

Why is an address shown as last used?

The “last used” information shows when the address was last involved in receiving funds. This helps you identify when a specific address was used.
