Bitsurance offers optional insurance for a specific Bitcoin account through the BitBoxApp. You keep control of your private keys, while the insurance can provide financial compensation for covered physical risks, such as burglary, violent extortion or fire, subject to your policy’s conditions and limits.

BitBox provides the hardware wallet and app integration. Bitsurance is the insurance intermediary and handles applications, contracts and claims. For its German offering, Bitsurance names Liberty Mutual Insurance Europe SE as the insurer, acting through Liberty Specialty Markets Europe S.à r.l., German Branch. BitBox does not decide whether a loss is covered.

What does the insurance cover?

A policy applies to the Bitcoin account named in the insurance documents. It does not automatically cover your entire BitBox wallet, other accounts, other cryptocurrencies or bitcoin belonging to someone else. Insuring another account requires a separate contract.

Device loss and bitcoin loss are different. Under the current German policy, a covered event must make the insured bitcoin unavailable; qualifying transfers forced by threats of violence at the insured location have separate provisions. Losing or damaging a BitBox does not by itself mean the bitcoin are lost: access may still be restored from a backup or another wallet. A purely technical device defect is not automatically an insured event.

Insurance does not replace a protected, usable wallet backup. Continue to protect your BitBox and backup against unauthorized access, fire and water, and keep them separately.

Before applying, check these limits in the documents offered for your country:

  • Insured amount: The current German offer lists €10,000, €50,000 and €100,000, with higher amounts subject to individual review. Value above your agreed limit is uninsured.
  • Deductible: The German FAQ currently lists 10% for bitcoin losses, capped at €1,000. Your policy specifies the applicable deductible.
  • Hardware compensation: The German conditions limit compensation for the hardware wallet itself to €200 and exclude it from the deductible.
  • Location and storage: The policy names an insured location and sets storage obligations. Ask Bitsurance before permanently storing your wallet or backup elsewhere.

These German terms are not a guarantee for every country or contract. Your insurance certificate and applicable conditions determine coverage. Review the Bitsurance FAQ and the insurance documents provided with your offer.

Is my country and Bitcoin account eligible?

Bitsurance currently advertises offers for residents of Germany and Austria. Its Switzerland page currently offers a waitlist. A country appearing in the website’s selector does not mean coverage is available there; check the offer for your residence before applying.

The BitBox integration supports Bitcoin accounts using Native SegWit addresses, which start with bc1q. Taproot addresses, starting with bc1p, and Wrapped SegWit addresses are not currently supported for insurance in this integration.

Bitsurance recommends a separate Bitcoin account used only with Native SegWit addresses. This helps keep the insured funds identifiable and limits the account history disclosed during enrollment. If you need to move funds, follow the separate guide to sending Bitcoin to your own Native SegWit account. A transfer requires a network fee and confirmation of the destination on your BitBox.

You can still move bitcoin after enrollment, but moving funds to another account does not move the insurance policy with them. Check with Bitsurance if a transfer or change of address type could affect your coverage.

What information do I share?

The application asks for personal, contact, insured-location, payment and contract information. Bitsurance also receives the selected account’s extended public key, or xPub, and a signed message proving control of the account.

An xPub lets its recipient derive account addresses and monitor balances and transactions. It cannot spend bitcoin, but it can link your account activity to your identity. See what an extended public key reveals before agreeing to share it.

The application runs in an embedded Bitsurance form. Bitsurance processes the insurance information according to its privacy policy. The BitBoxApp passes the requested public account proof to that form and uses a hash derived from the account’s xPub for status lookups. Hashing those lookups does not remove the information disclosed during enrollment.

Never disclose wallet secrets

Bitsurance does not need your recovery words, private keys, wallet backup, device password or optional passphrase. Never enter them into the insurance form or send them to Bitsurance, BitBox Support or anyone else. Stop if an application or contact asks for them.

Start an application in the BitBoxApp

Have the BitBox for the intended account available. The app needs it to confirm the account proof during enrollment.

  1. Open Marketplace in the BitBoxApp, then select the Insure tab. This opens the Bitsurance introduction or, if an existing policy is detected, the insured-accounts overview.
  2. Select Check availability and pricing. From an existing insured-accounts overview, select Insure a new account instead. The app checks for existing policies before offering account selection.
  3. In Select account, open the account selector, choose the Bitcoin account you intend to insure and select Next. If only one eligible account is available, the app can select it automatically. Follow the app’s prompts to connect and unlock the corresponding BitBox.
  4. If the integration notice appears, read it and select Agree and continue to open the Bitsurance form.
  5. Follow the Bitsurance form to review eligibility, the insured account, coverage, price and contract terms. Confirm the requested proof of account control on your BitBox only if it matches the application you started. If the account or request is unexpected, cancel and check with Bitsurance before continuing.

Submitting an application does not itself activate coverage. The start date in your insurance documents and receipt of the first premium determine when coverage begins.

If the app reports that no accounts can be insured, check the account requirements above before continuing.

Check insurance status

Return to Marketplace → Insure to see insured accounts, maximum coverage and status. If the introduction appears instead, select Check for existing insurance to synchronize policies for the connected wallet. If nothing is found, check that the intended wallet is connected.

Insurance policy active is distinct from Processing or Waiting for payment. An inactive, refused or canceled status also needs attention. If the displayed status conflicts with your documents or payment record, use Manage contract beside that account to contact Bitsurance. The app display does not override the policy or guarantee that a particular claim is covered.

The integration depends on Bitsurance for applications and status updates. An unavailable insurance service does not give Bitsurance control of your private keys. Your wallet backup restores wallet access; it does not recreate an insurance contract or claim record.

Payments, renewal and cancellation

Bitsurance currently lists Bitcoin/Lightning, PayPal/credit card and SEPA transfer as payment options. Use the methods and instructions offered for your contract. To manage an existing policy, open Marketplace → Insure and select Manage contract beside the relevant account.

Under the current German terms, contracts lasting at least one year renew annually unless canceled in time. Cancellation can take effect on the first day of a month, with notice received at least one month beforehand. Send cancellation requests in text form to service@bitsurance.eu and check the conditions that apply to your contract.

Report a claim or get insurance support

Report a loss promptly to schaden@bitsurance.eu. Keep your policy number ready, document damage with photos and retain damaged items until Bitsurance releases them. Criminal incidents also require prompt police notification and supporting reports; fire or flood claims may require fire-service or other official documentation.

For invoices, contract changes or coverage questions, contact service@bitsurance.eu. BitBox Support can help with app functionality, but cannot manage your policy or process a claim.
